I vaguely remember seeing a past MR article with pictures and layout diagram on an inward-facing figure 8 style layout. I think it had a southwestern or desert theme. I can’t remember the railroad which was being modeled. If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be most appreciated!
You may be thinking of Fleming Örneholm’s roughly 8’X14’ HO layout in the February October 2006 Model Railroader. It was divided into 4 scenes and there was a figure 8 crossing in the middle. One viewed it from inside the figure 8.
Probably not all that important in the scheme of things but I think I can even offer an explanation of where you got the incorrect February reference.
From memory recently in one of those subscriber emails that MR sends there was a small free download PDF of something that Orneholm had written. A link at the foot of the PDF actually sent you to February 2006.
As we know that magazine did not actually contain anything by Orneholm.
By face inward, I believe they mean that the viewer stands inside the figure 8 to view the model, as opposed to standing outside and looking in, as is normally the case.
Looks like a very interesting and creative layout in a limited space. The downside is the duckunders. Not just to get into the layout but to move from one viewing area to another. Looks like a young man’s layout.
All … thanks for the insights. Yes … October 2006 “Eaglecreek & Northern”. I think the style in the track plan database threw me (“dioramas viewed from operating pits”). My son and I are considering outward facing sectional diaramas as a first layout (basically a 4x8 divided into 4.2 sections.) Our other option is a shelf layout around his room. Lots of variables at this point, including what my wife is willing to deal with : )
