Looking for pedestals (HO) to convert an 89’ Flat Car to COFC

Hi all,

My Google is weak. I am looking for a set of pedestals to put on a flat car to mount containers. I can’t find any via Google so I am hoping someone knows of a source, or what they use for this.

There are also some listed in Ebay. Once in HO scale trains, type TOFC in the search bar.

Mike.

Thanks! The restraint curbs look close enough for what I need.

I totally misread your post, and thought you wanted the trailer fifth wheel stands.

Mike.

If You want the real one’s made just for that purpose…send Me a PM (private message) so You can give Me your mailing address and I’ll send You a bunch FREE. The Athearn kits cars that I got yrs. ago came with all kinds of those, that you can put on if you wanted to. I just never used any of them.

Take Care! [:D]

Frank

I don’t know if this matters to you, but some real 89’ flat cars were not manufactured with pedestal tracks and were purposed only for TOFC (trailers), before and after conversion to 2x45’ trailer service (TTX vs. WTTX)

Walthers has offered both kinds of flat cars, without and with pedestal tracks. Usually those with the pedestal tracks were labeled “all purpose” as they could be loaded with trailers and containers, both.

The TOFC only with hitches but no pedistal tracks were TTX and WTTX, while the “all purpose” TOFC/COFC flat cars which have pedistal tracks were TTAX and TTWX. Applicable reporting mark explanations are below. The mid-late 80’s KTTX and RTTX (see below) were TOFC only and had no pedestal tracks.

Usually the models which represent “all purpose” 89’ flat cars came with pedestals in the box, so did your’s come with them? Or were they lost or missing. Models not representing “all purpose” 89’ flat cars would not normally be provided with pedistals and would not have pedestal tracks.

Accurail 89’ flat car bodies were made with pedestal tracks molded in and are "all purpose. Atlas 89’ flat cars are also “all purpose”. Athearn’s “all purpose” flat car (some 4+ scale feet too short) has pedestal tracks and comes with pedestals. Athearn’s 89’ TOFC flat car does not have pedestal tracks and is not meant for COFC loading.

Which flat car are you wanting to convert?

ATTX - 75’ all purpose flatcar (center and side tiedowns)
BTTX - 89’ flat

It is a JTTX. I am less interested in 100% accuracy. I thought I was buying a bunch of Trailer Flats, but the JTTX worked its way into the pile I bought. I am tempted at this point to glue trailer hitches on to it and call it day. A very small part of me does want to put something else on the flat. One idea I had was taking one of my beyond repair cars and make a scrap car out of it.

Your call of course.

BLMA made JTTX flat cars which carried those long green pipes.

Here is a youtube video regarding them:

I think they are pretty cool and I think ealier versions of this ran on the D&RGW in the early 80’s. I may try to see myself through to a few of these cars eventually.

That is exactly what I was thinking of doing. I have the tubing on order, and was either going to use it for that or for gondola loads.
