I am looking for a source for Athearn Genesis Chassis. I have some older Athearn locos I want to update and install sound in.
Within the last few weeks I saw a post discussing upgrading older locos or powering them that gave a link to a supplier who had a stock of the Genesis chassis for a reasonable price. Several searches though the postings failed to turn up the link.
It looks like they’ve discontinued a number of them, but they still have F-unit A and B chassis. I found one at my LHS. According to the owner, a while back there was quite a market for the sound chassis (now discontinued) as a very cheap upgrade to sound.
Larry is correct, discontinued just means out of stock, I think they do that so as to not be “promising” to have more later, but in most cases you can bet they will.
I knew that Athearn was out of stock. I remember a post that gave a link to another dealer. When I clicked on it it took me to a site where the ‘mechanisms’ were available for $39.99. I thought I had bookmarked it, but alas, not so.
I have been going through the old posts with ‘genesis’ in them looking for the link with no luck. I’ll keep trying.
Last fall, I saw a remotor kit in the Walthers catalog. I asked about it, and someone suggested a complete new chassis. That’s the way I ended up going.
Stewart Hobbies/Bowser makes a drive mechanism with optional Loksound that fits under the Athearn shells. Bowser makes excellent drive mechanisms with quality can motors! And it’s American made.
The MRC sound one installed in the Athearn is…not as desirable.
There are other drive chasis available here. But I don’t know if they fit over Athearn Shells. You could give them a call and they would probably be able to tell you.
I’m not sure who the site was your looking for but we have a guy here in New Jersey Model Railcraft depot
the owners name is Jeff and he’s a very knowledgeable and very nice guy to deal with he has the most complete stock of Athearn parts I’ve ever seen. Hope this helps.
