Looking for Steam Loco Plans, Drawings or Photos

I am looking for a set of information that I can use for carving a 4-4-0 style steam locomotive.

I have done 2 before (see my blog www.carvintom.blogspot.com, I just posted my latest) with varying levels of success.

My problem is that I despite the wealth of information on the Internet) have never found really good drawings or photos so much of the design is done by guesswork.

I’d like to get some good line drawings (preferred) or photos (taking straight-on so I can make actual measurements).

My only requirement for the loco is that it be of the 1850 to 1880 sort of time frame. Wood or coal burning, I really don’t care I just want one with a “classic look”.

Thanks!

Model Railroader Cyclopedia - Volume 1. STEAM LOCOMOTIVES, has two basic plans, several broadside drawings and a hatful of photos of 1870-era 4-4-0s, mostly the Virginia and Truckee locos of that time. Also included are slightly later (1880s) PRR locos with that signature Belpaire firebox, and NYC 999, the 1893 Empire State Express record setter.

The book is published by Kalmbach (copyright 1960, fifteenth printing 2001.) It’s for sale at the Company Store for $49.99. Just click SHOP at the top of the forum page.

I think you would find this website to be quite useful

It includes drawings of a classic 4-4-0 and a wealth of other information
