Looking for the ultimate organizer ***HELP***

As I sit here building my latest wood structure, I find myself spending more time searching for brushes, paints, tools, wood strips, decales, etc. etc. etc. than I spend working on the project. I’ve searched the internet looking for the perfect table top organizer but just can’t find it. It needs to keep my paints, brushes, tools (knives, tweezers, saws, jigs, etc.) wood scraps and small pieces in order and in easy reach. Remember I’ve searched for this for a while and have seen most of the basics, so give me somthing different. Any suggestions guys, I’d even be open to building it myself if anyone knows of some woodworking plans that I could check out.

Thanks Don

I think you’re going to have to design your own. Heres’ what I use…

Hobby Lobby Tool and Paint brush carousels

Bed Bath and Beyond drawer organizer

My own custom paint holder

Old office metal cabinet

There are plastic sets of drawers at Wal-Mart and other places. Some of them have deep drawers, others shallow ones, some have a mix. Most of them come with casters. You can either use commercial drawer organizers in them or make your own. I also have some smaller, smaller table top ones for specific, often used smaller stuff. I have some of these, some divided flip top boxes (the ones with moveable dividers are handier), sets of storage bins with the little plastic drawers and an old set of small office drawers as in the previous post. A set of inexpensive steel shelves are also handy for storing unbuilt kits, some of the above drawered storage bins and boxes, I prefer the 5 shelf type when I can get them. I am still in the process of moving things around to get a “best” fit for my needs. I amstill organizing my “whole” space abd as my available work space changes, I find different arrangements work better.

Good luck,

I have been using those tackle boxes that have the dividers that can be removed for longer objects. They work great for me. You easily stack them.

Perhaps something along the lines of a Gerstner chest or machinist chest? The good thing about the old wooden ones is they were felt lined to protect precision tools compared to the steel mechanics chests from the big box stores. I’m planning to build myself one so we’ll see how it turns out. Currently using a large Plano tackle box, but it has it’s limitations. If your thinking of something for the top of the bench during use, perhaps a fly tyers bench would work. Places like Cabella’s or Orvis have some really neat benches and caddys for that.
