looking to purchase

Anyone have any old unbuilt HO wooden freight car kits they no longer need and are willing to sell?

I’m looking for Quality Craft, Olympic Cascade, Northeastern, Ambroid, Labelle, Bev Bel (by Quality Craft…yellow box), Main Line, etc. Preferably unusual cars, covered hoppers, flats, tanks, box cars and gondolas. I already have too many open hoppers.

I’m also looking for Champ decals of unusual roads for the above from the 20’s to late 50’s periods.

This is not for resale as I am replacing all of my plastic (but weathered) rolling stock with hand builts.

Many thanks,

Howard Zane

Howard, I’ll dig around in that disaster area called a shop and see what I can dig up. I might have both unbuilt HO kits, as well as some decals.

La Belle still sells the kits. I believe Ye Odle Huff n Puff is selling kits again. Mrr Warehouse still sells Red Ball kits. Full Circle models has a box car kit. BTS sells kits.

Rich,

Thanks for the tips. I am familiar with Full circle and the one HO car they produce which is magnificent, but before the era I am modeling. I have built literally every HO Labelle offering during the late 60’s, and still have most of them, but at today’s prices which are probably fair…well, lets say that is why I’m trying to find older kits stuffed away for decades and purchased at a much lower cost.

Red Ball…just a bit to crude, but still great for the time. I believe that BTS is only producing a fire train in HO. Huff and Puff models do not fit into my scheme.

Anyone know of other producers of 50’s era HO wood rolling stock kits?

My current crop of many cars from, Red caboose, Intermountain, Kadee, etc.are beautiful and are weathered to what I call realistic, but they ain’t mine. I can not build a kit that looks as good as any of today’s offerings, but hand built cars seem to have soul and of course are my art work…not someone elses.

I have built many Westerfield, Sunshine, and F&C kits, and I love them. But there is something, at least for me, that is in a hand built wood kit that I like very much.

Ok, I could not tell what you had done. Champ Decals still exist contrary to reports you might have heard. I just looked at their web site. Advertising is not permitted in these forums so do a Google search if you do not have their web site.

Geat Decals web site shows a bunch of decal companies.

Bitter Creek Models is going to start producing the BC Models cars. Those probably are a little crude compared to stick built and probably not youe era.

Howard, you may want to join the HO yard sale group at yahoo.com. The group was created just for buying and selling HO scale equipment. My web browser won’t let me link in this, but just go to groups.yahoo.com and do a search for hoyardsale.

I have a bunch of Mainline kits that are unbuilt. I’ll put together a list of them and PM you with it. I have reached the point where I know that most will probably never be built by me and need to whittle things down.

I thought we weren’t allowed to buy/sell on the forum [%-)]

Lou, the mods have been considering this, and it seems we all feel this is acceptable…it’s a solicitation for help, not overt selling. The transactions, if they were to materialize, would undoubtedly take place via pm’s and such, and I am sure Howard would insist upon it being done privately anyway. So, we view this as a request for help, with an offer to purchase items, but there is no offer to sell items and no advertizing.

I would assume Howard will have no trouble finding what he needs, thanks to the “collecting” (some say hoarding)habits of model railroaders, ask MR’s exactly how much stuff they have ferreted away under the train set and everywhere else, why someone would buy 25 boxcar kits and never build or use them and stuff them away forever is a mystery for some of us, now that you know there are tons of this stuff out there, just try and convince one of them to part with one single item, good luck.

Assumption is the mother and grand mother of all screw-ups. I also would have thought that this very yesterday facet of this hobby would have had plenty of participants who have chosen to upgrade to todays beautiful RTR models and “simple assembly” but wonderful plastic kits.

Not so! I have had two replies with no follow ups. Where are all of these thousands of unbuilt wood kits? I rarely see them at my Timonium shows, and other shows for that matter.

My guess is that it is a lot like all those beautiful classic cars rusting aways in someone’s yard…“I’m going to rebuild that someday.”

Oh, they are out there, but remember instead of 50 guys going to HS and buying ONE boxcar, one guy went and bought 50 cars, and has them jammed away somewhere and can’t even remember what or where they are. Take a look at some photos on this forum and look in the background and under the layouts, box after box after box filled with “stuff” never to be used. This is still one of the mysteries of this hobby.

Speaing of assumptions, I managed to dig through the Garage of Doom’s “stash” of kits. None in HO scale. Plenty of Quality Craft, Gloor Craft, Suncoast kits. All in O scale. It would seem that I traded off a lot of my HO stash at someone’s show (wonder who is the promoter of that little get-together just off I-83 north of Baltimore?) for a new stash of O scale kits…

I do still have Ho scale decals, what are you looking for, roadnames and era?
