Loram today

In case you wondered what a Loram track grinder looked like when it was working…

They were spraying ahead and behind to cut down the chance of a grass fire.

This is on the former Fort Worth and Denver, (BNSF now) about a block from my house…pretty close to 3:30 pm.

Hope you get a chance to watch the trains through there for the next couple of days–and listen to them hummin’ along!

Last time I watched a grinder relatively close-up they were emitting a toxic-looking cloud of steel filings. I don’t think those protective covers catch everything!

And wouldn’t you love to see one of these at night?

Great pictures.

That’s an amazing piece of equipment. --rich

The other folks at the crossing were not quite prepared for the smoke or the smell, kinda a combo of burnt electrical wire and melted metal.

And the lead spray tank didn’t keep all the dust down as well as it could have.

Get to hear them humming by right now, almost sounds like a small single engine propeller driven aircraft, that same droning hum.

Would have loved to see it done at night, oh well, maybe next time.

This was the closest I could find

The five links I posted are of picture/video of the things working at night/dusk. It is probably not the same as watching them in person but, close enough.
