And they continue to rebuild the Pacific Electric. Nice to see. Everywhere it seems, electric cars were the right idea… Just a century ahead of there time.
Significant parts of the Metrorail system are going back onto the routes of the old Pacific electric system. The line from downtown LA to Long Beach (Blue Line) closely aligns with the last of the active PE routes. The growth and development of the LA basin was channeled along those PE tracks, and it is no wonder that they are coming back into use. Too bad they were eliminated in the 50’s because interest in getting a light rail system in place first appeared in the 70’s.
I well remember the streetcars of Birmingham Electric Company during the 1940’s when I would visit my aunt
by going there on Southern # 20, called Goldenrod, from
Selma. It seems they were painted a yellowish orange
and ran with a whine all the way. Brand new silent cars
were added in 1951 only to be promptly replaced with silent
electric buses. They lacked the romance of rail cars.
