I moved from the LA area May 99, but lived in Monrovia & earlier just North of Valley Blvd a mile, so want to do a realistic backdrop of the Mountains, north of I10 & Atantic Blvd. & Valley Blvd, cause where we lived was a great winter view of Mt. Baldy out our front window, and the rest of the mountains. from Mt. Wilson to Baldy north of Mountain ave . Images/pictures from along Valley & Southern Pacific tracks would be a big help, Santa Anita racetrack is too close to Mts. Anyone could help. I lived so many years next to Long Beach Freeway at Imperial Hwy, that was the view for 23 years out my kitchen window. email is blue-dot-puma5 at gmail.com south of LAX line over Southgate. Thanks, a shot in the dark, but had to ask.
Anyone have shots of the LA slaughterhouse murals of Farmer John" Pigs with Halos going up to heaven on angels wings. Last saw in 69-70 timeframe. All those disappeared as “billboards” at meat markets, butcher shops along foothill between Glendale & Pasadena? Loved those. Like Murals, search “Boxcar” bar in Minn. Waseca I believe for the Bar & Liqour store. love them. Posted from our Mankato, MN trip.
The Farmer Johns hog processing facality has joined those departed hogs in "hog heaven"and, yes I do rememeber that macabe mural, never though to take a photo however! I fear urban sprawl could be your enemy, depending on your era that could be good or bad.
Wish I could help you out, Tom. My time there was just at the end timeline of '74 into the 80s.
I do know what you mean, about the beautiful view of Mt Baldy. I would see it from Covina, Walnut or at my brothers Rancho Cucamonga. A nice break from that awful smog of the '70s Spring rain and snow from Lake Arrowhead and up.
Check with local historical groups, someone should have pictures. What about contacting Farmer John directly, they of all people should have some historical records of the mural. I believe they are now owned by Hormel.
Another possible source is check the Huell Howser TV show archives, he did an episode at the mural on either the ‘Videolog’ show, ‘Visiting with Huell Howser’ or the ‘California’s Gold’ shows, You can get copies of the shows thru the website.
Wish I could help you with the mural, sure do remember it on the way to my grandmothers home in L.A., also remember the smell :).
If you want to get some structures from the San Gabrial area, try Alpine Division Scale Models. They have a doctors house from Monrovia about 2 blocks from where my wife lived. There lumber rack is based on the one in San Dimas where I grew up (Charter Oak area). They have several others from the area
Searched for Farmer John Murals and found a different group on the newer facility in nearby, so the pigs with halos are gone, but they are worth viewing if you have any ideas about murals. I like them, Found one on Boxcar Bar in Minn. on our labor day tip to Mankato, there are some here in Ottawa, IL - school on IL-89, and downtown area. Found one in Rock Falls, MN & took pictures near the Train Station, was closed, 2008.
Another Mural in Rock Falls, IL on Market, a block or so from Union Pacific Tracks from Chicago to Clinton, Iowa. Wife & I followed tracks in all directions, so pictures are posted on my google Picasa folders with trains, sights on vacations.
We lived across a barley field 1/4 mile, from a cattle feedlot from '54-60 at Puente Ave, between Sunset Ave, & Valley Blvd. - got used to the poot smell, we only noticed it after a week camping near Green Valley Lake, below Big Bear. My cousin callled Puente, Pee-U-N-T-A afterthey visted from Nashville, Tenn.
SP tracks, loved hearing and seeing the trains,F7A/B cattle cars, switching & swinging crossing signals.
Still can use help with the San Gabrial Mountains backdrop appearance - tried drawing with Paint program, but XP paint is better, may need to render as remembered. Did find long ago a winter LA of mountains by Convention Center & Santa Monica Fwy, a favoirite. - puma
Puma, its always nice to see a Native in the forum. Just off hand, I too am a Native California, born in downtown Los Angeles. Old enough to remember many of grand sites… from Angels Flight to the Streetcars of early L.A. I must admit, I wouldn’t mind doing a Farmer John’s mural for the side of a building, but hey I’ve got lots of other irons in the fire.
So I went and did a search and typed in on MSN Bing on got these results. I believe the second link has more murals. Just thought I’d drop in and say ‘Hello’ ~
On one search I typed in Farmer Johns Murals … and the other I typed in for a search… Farmer John Processing Plants.
When I do a search on MSN … I ask for ‘Images’ (click on ‘images’) instead of the web choice on Bing
Now I have done various images to resemble some logo before… making the image and printing it on decal paper. It wasn’t easy … then again… it wasn’t hard.
Below is a pic of one decal / image I did and was quite pleased. I model in N scale so any poor image (large pixels) will not show up when making such small images. Nice thread to read this morning … thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas.
I believe you can take some of those Farmer John images and print them on decal paper and have a nice mural for the sides of the building.
I live in Los Angeles, I could get you a pic the next time I’m in that part of town. There’s still some snow on Baldy but not as much as during the Winter.
