Lost issue of Railroad Model Craftsman

I can’t seem to find my November 1993 Issue of Railroad Model Craftsman… In it there was an article on 5 Midwestern Geeps (GP7s). I was looking to do the Chicago Great Western tricolor scheme on a Lionel GP9 I bought quite a while ago. Anyways, the CGW tricolor scheme I wanna do is mentioned in the article. If memory serves me correctly (but I could be wrong), the article suggested Floquil SP Scarlet for the red, but I can’t recall what was suggested for the maroon. Can anyone help me out here?

Actually, if anyone out there has any other reccomendations for CGW maroon, I am open to them… However, I go for more of the “straight from the paint shop look” as opposed to the weathered and often dingy purple look that many people assosciate with the “Chicago Grape Western.”

The pictures in the article look like it produces more of a purple than a maroon, at least to my eyes. The author says he mixed Floquil maroon, roof brown, a few drops of black, and a drop or two of SP scarlet. Does not give any sort of proportion beyond that.

The October 1997 issue of Model Railroader had a “paintshop” feature on CGW maroon that I think might be exactly what you are looking for. And Jeff Wilson had an article in the October 1998 issue of MR on CGW F units, in various paint schemes, with additional useful info.

You might also enjoy this feature on CGW F units in the Chicago & North Western Historical Society’s online modeling magazine: http://www.cnwhs.org/cnwhs_modeler/Modeler_2_2.pdf
