LS&I U30C's, on borrowed time?

Last summer, LS&I tested a set of EMD’s (sd50’s?) with hopes of replacing thier fleet of ex-BN U30C’s. Word on the street is that they are living on borrowed time. Does anyone know the status of the fleet? I’ve heard that they may be gone as soon as this spring… I’ve emailed a few LS&I officials for updates, but have not heard back from anyone (usually they are very good about responses to dumb railfan questions). Thanks everyone. ~Kevin

What, no second hand 6 axle Dash 8s? Since South America has cornered the used GE market, especially with all those C30-7s shipped south of the border, finding used GE’s is probably a hard task.

ex- UP nee- C&NW Dash8-40Cs 29 of them were just returned to their lessor.

i must say it would be nice for the ex-CNW dash 8s to get LSI paint.

LSI didnt like the SD50s? not surprising. SD50s looked awesome but just weren’t good runners. problems abound. even the SD60 had problems of its own. sad but true. oh well. i still love 'em

I acutally heard the LS&I liked the SD50 demonstrator they had, but my information is always second or third hand for stuff from the U.P. (of Michigan). All the railfan rumors out there (which is one problem, they are just rumors) seem to point to the fact that the LS&I is going to replace the U30Cs sometime this year, but nobody’s really said with what.

The irony of it all would be interesting. Remember back in the late 80’s when CN&W sent thier SD50’s north to replace the C628’s. I appreciate the info, guess i should start planning a trip up there for the last pictures… So sad. ~Kevin
