Lunch Hour Models -The Gas Works Series

Well here goes the first post. I’ll post each Monday with 1 photo for each day.

I’m building 4 models in this series:

The Gas Plant (As seen in last weekend’s photo fun: http://cs.trains.com/trccs/forums/t/151731.aspx)

The Gas Storage Tank (Which I’m building now)

The Gas Retort

Tichy City Water Tower.

This is what we are currently building:

Day 1:

This model is very cleverly designed. I have to give points to Walthers for the way this thing is put together. I think it’s going to be a fairly easy kit. My only concern is painting. I’m going to use special oxide red out of a spray can. But I’m thinking maybe I should spray the rest before assembly. There are multiple nooks that might be hard to reach with a spray can when assembled.

The tower support post do have some minor mold lines. I trimmed the mold lines off by scrapping the lines with the back stroke of a sharp #11.

Please note: There is a support ridge for the stair platform on the bottom piece. It goes to the right, not to the left. It’s hard to assemble it upside down as the top contains two ridges which fit into the support.

When I build a model with nooks and crannies I spray a lot of it before assembly. Just make sure you scrape the paint off the areas that are going to be glued before assembly or the glue wont hold properly. Then after assembly you just have touch ups and clear coat to do. I look forward to the rest of your posts as the model progresses.
