I am looking to scratchbuild a model of a 50 ton steam derrick/wreck crane. I’ve found enough plans and diagrams to begin, but I’m looking for photos. Aside from a single photo on railroad.net, I haven’t had any luck finding photos of Maryland & Pennsylvania X1 even though the description mentions that it was “frequently photographed.” I even know that the derrick lasted until 1998, when it was scrapped.
Does anyone know where I can find photos of this pint-sized derrick? Does anyone have any they’d be willing to share? At this point any shots would be most welcome.
Join the Yahoo Group for the Ma & Pa http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/MaPaRailroad/ There’s at least one picture in the photos section under the non revenue album. Other albums may have other pictures. You could also post a request to the group as well.
I did a quick Google search for Maryland & Pennsylvania X1 crane and came up fairly quickly with the below link. Scroll down a ways. Good size photo. Knowing how to ask the question and sometimes trying different similar words will work.
Thanks for the link, but that is the one I already have. That is also the site that mentions that the X1 was “frequently photographed.”
Ironrooster, thank you for the yahoo group link. The photos you mentioned are a little small, but I found a lead on some info that might be just what I’m looking for.
The spiral-bound book “The 50 Best of Beloved MA & PA” by Charles T. Mahan, Jr. (Barnard, Roberts & Co., publisher) has a 6" x 10" photo of X1 on page 29. Photo date is January, 1943. Boom car X2, taken the same day while coupled to X1, is on the next page. There is also a photo of X1 in service, but that one is from some distance and lacks detail. The page 29 photo appears to be of the “other side” than the one shown in the link provided in this discussion. The book is out of print, but turns up once in awhile at dealers.
