Madison Square Garden told to move
So we have to wait 10-years to improve Penn Station? Or actually 20-years for a new station to be design, financed, the MSG torn down and the new station built.
I rather MSG stay where it is and some one invest more money in the existing station. A lot is actually already being done, what needs to be done is to build upon these efforts.
The City giveth and the City taketh away. I can almost understand why Mr. Guse feels the way he does (although will never argree with him.
Its about time the original wrong of tearing down Penn Station is reversed!
Now New York City shows just how out of touch they truly are. Madison Square Garden should not be where it is. But, it is not going anywhere. It covers the Long Island Railroad’s losses in tax revenues collected at events from Kincks games to the Westminster Dog Show, to all manner of events. It will be replaced, but not within ten years. Why not evict the United Nations and put a new arena there? It would pay taxes, and generate revenue for the city the UN annoys endlessly, and is lost to the tax rolls of a bankrupt (But, in denial of this fact) city.
And where does the Farley building fit into all this?
Where better to have MSG than above Penn Station? Having MSG above Penn Station makes it so easy for everybody to got to MSG, which through the tickets that are sold and the price of food and stuff sold at MSG (whether it is a sports, entertanment or circus event) helps NYC balance its budget. But what do you expect from a bunch of politicians (after the Dolan’s dropped many dollars fixing up MSG which helped the NYC economy!
THAT,S IT, KEEP RUNNING YOUR BIG LIBERAL YAPS I,D LIKE TO SEE THEM PULL OUT ALL MAJOR TRAIN SERVICE OUT OF NYC. THEN WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO YOU,LL SUFFER. BIG TIME.
There is plenty of development space over on the West side so move the garden there and build a new train station at Penn station that can handle future crowds. The original Penn station was torn down when rail travel was falling rapidly . Now we are going in the opposite direction so they can build a new Penn station that has places to eat and stores to go to that is accessable.
Good… Madison Square Garden needs to go away. Isn’t Madison Square really at Fifth, Broadway and 23rd Streets?

I too, wonder how does the Farley building fit into this picture? Years ago, I talked to an Amtrak official that wouldn’t it be great if they tear down MSG and rebuild Penn? He just shook his head. Hey, ya never know!
Wow. almost $1B for improvements to MSG?
I suspect that it wouldn’t cost a whole lot more to build a new station built over the yard in the place, a few blocks away, that the Jets wanted a stadium a decade ago.
Seems silly to spend that much money on a 40+ year old stadium.
Good!
The old Penn station is before my time, so I can speak to how easy it was to find your way around. Would it be easier to find today’s NJ Transit area or the subway or the restrooms if the old building was still there? I don’t know. But they’re talking about replacing MSG, which is ABOVE the station.
So what if they replace the sports arena with an office building or a shopping mall? How is that going to make it easier to find your way around? The old Penn Station is gone and it’s not coming back. What they need to do is quit the grandiose plans, and design some clear signage and maybe redesign some of the corridors so people can get where they need to go without frustration.
I was not aware of the renovation of MSG until I read this story. Boy, that would complicate matters concerning the Dolan’s moving elsewhere! Penn Station is certainly confusing to navigate to the uninitiated and I don’t envy those involved in this improvement project to implement any meaningful changes in the near future. Grand Central is still the best place to catch a train!
Penn Station isn’t glamorous by any means, but it is functional. Passenger trains already don’t make money, and now this tremendous cost added to it? And what about all those people who use MSG? Surely some of them arrive by train, which happen to be directly below. Surely most of them couldn’t ever hope to park their cars anywhere near that close. If more space is needed for the trains, perhaps they should look deeper into the ground, and perhaps a few blocks north south or east.
Hmmm… Gotta tell ya’, this is something I just aint concerned about.
No longer the “bargain basement” entry for Amtrak & commuter passengers? The best news since Grand Cetral was renovated an made both beaiful and “totally awesome.”
Dear Christine: If ya only coulda’ kept what ya had! Older & Greater than ratty old GCS ever was or ever could been. If ya want those ole White Mountain Marble Doric Columns, Lions & etc. their all in the Jersey Swamps by the side of the Turnpike a couple of miles north of the Lousyberg switch n’ Swap.
