I went to visit Magic Kingdom today. My dad is a cast member and there was a rumour that they had a soft opening for Pirates of the Carribean, which was previously repaired and changed, so that it could incorperate some of the newer, Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow. As a matter of fact, we’re going to see the new one tonight at a midnight show!
Anyhow, I took some pictures of a few train-related things that I thought you all might enjoy.
First, is Big Thunder Mountain’s Mine Train. I think I got a REALLY good shot of it, even though it was moving at RollerCoaster speeds. It looks really old and dusty…just so you know, it is supposed to be like that!
The next are of Main Street Station. It is the Main Station of Walt’s Trains that run around the park.
Here is a Special Picture, Just so you know these are authentic.
The next are of one of the 4 Beautiful steam engines. They are heated with propane, to keep emissions down. As you know, Disney has no price limit!
Cool. Who made the HO trains? Is there a manufacturer’s plate on the engine anywhere? And do the propane cannisters mean your train runs on propane, just like the prototype at Disney?
Mister Beasly - Disney designed and manufatured the model train. No, as much as I wish, it is electric. [:D] The canisters in the back are for repairing my real model of a stationary steam engine. One of the pipes came loose and a soldering gun doesn’t work on brass…
Monkey Man - Yes, they still make the G scale trains and monorails. They also make extra track.
There are builders plates on the locos at Magic Kingdom. I know at least one is a Baldwin. Once I find the tape, I’ll post more info on the loco I filmed.
You need to book in advance, pay up front & you need to be at the Magic Kingdom before 7:30 am with photo id & your confirmation # or you don’t get in.
A number of years ago, I used to work at a Disney dude ranch as a cowboy taking people on horseback rides, etc. An opporunity opened one day to relocate to the Orlando DisneyWorld transportation center to get into their apprentice locomotive engineer program. Because I’m an idiot, I turned it down.
Over the years I’ve often wondered if the program would have required me to obtain DOT certification or whatever AMTRAK engineers need and could I have later gotten a job at a tourist RR (like Conway Scenic) as an engineer. Does anyone out there know?
Needless to say, I’ve regretted my decision countless times since
