Trainworld and a few other places are having a blowout on the BLI Class J. I bought one on Friday and it was delivered today. As I was reading through the manual it said that I need a magnetic wand to reset the decoder or adjust the volume (without using CVs), but I don’t know what the magnetic wand looks like. The only thing that came with mine was a nut driver for replacing the traction tire wheelset with a non-traction tired wheelset. Does this double as the magnetic wand, or do I need something else?
No, the magnet wand looks like a small black lighter with a rounded end, which has the magnet in it, and it also has Broadway Limited Imports longated Keystone on it.
Mine was located in one of the pockets in the foam with the Silica-gel packages. You should have two of the pocket type cutouts. One should have the extra driver set and screw driver and the other the magnet.
The cutouts are located between the engine and tender locations.
By the way. The blowout might be returned engines and are missing some items.
Good Luck
I discovered that the magnetic wand that comes with a NYC Hudson doesn’t have a powerful enough magnet to perform a reset, so I just used a stronger magnet.
Well I did not have the magnetic wand in the box anywhere, and now you have me thinking that I have got a second hand model. So I have another question. I have seen the review of the first release of the Class J and numbers 611-613 all had a bell in the pilot on the right side if you are looking at the headlight. My model did not have a bell in this position. Was this bell unique to the last group of J’s built or should all of them have them. Mine is road number 609, and it runs well and looks very clean, so I am hoping that it is not a return. I just want to make sure I am not missing anything other than the wand when I call Trainworld back.
Thanks,
Kevin
The magnet works, but you have to know precisely where to wave it, and it has to be essentially touching, or scraping the plastic above the reset place. Also, having only done it once many months ago, I believe you are supposed to shut off track power, then power up and hold the wand in place at the same time…not absolutely sure about that, though.
If it runs well, it is probably not a return. Most returns had operational problems and a friend sent an engine back for repair more than once, only to get it back running about the same. As far as I know, it should have the bell, but I will try to verify that from pictures that I have in books. .
There were some differences as the first five J,s built did have a Laird slide for the piston but the remainer of the group has the cross slide type like your should have. Several of the first group also had a rounded top water compartment inside the streamlined sides.
It sounds like you are missing the Wand. I would call BLI and ask for one. They recently shipped me two items that were broken in shipment and are very helpful with this type of missing or broken parts.
Go to Broadway-Limited.com and look up their phone number. You can email also, but I find calling and talking to them along with a Thank you really helps.
My BLI Hudson does not have the magnetic setup. It has a pot under the water hatch for adj sound and has a jumper on the sound board for resetting. Maybe yours is the same.
