Making of Kimm's Kanyon (lots of pics)

When I started the Sublime and Redikulus I had three scenes to build around. At each end I wanted a mountain, one in Minnesota with a lumber camp and the other in Arizona with a gold mine. I wanted them connected with a high bridge and a curved trestle across a floor to ceiling canyon modeled after Yellowstone. I am about done and here is a pictorial record.

A long shot with only the high bridge

The first task was to build a solid base for the canyon that could be stood on during construction. I use old oak stair treads

Then I started to stack the foam

Many sections were build on the work bench

I started to learn how to carve Hoodoos

Some paint and the Yosemite falls was added

The trestle is built and installed and the river is begun

I added some backdrop

The last wall section of foam is started

It has been fun watching this develop over the last year. A fantastic achievement and a wonderful photographic record. You should be really proud of what you have made. This scene is very dramatic and something that is not often tried. The idea of a floor to ceiling display affords views I will never have on my layout. Yours is richer for it Congratulations!

Art,

REMARKABLE!![tup][tup][tup]

Foam is fine, but how did you do your birch trees? [dinner]

Art, your canyon is one of THE BEST SCENES on a model layout of ALL TIME. It’s so well done, I wish I could come and run trains. I can just imagine the scene of my challenger hauling a stringof PFE reefers across the low trestle, and my GS-4 pulling the Daylight up on the high trestle. I wish I had a awesome scene like that. It’s definaltly one of the biggest inspirations for me.

Thanks for the photos!

Mark

Art. I remember when you were just into a track plan and asking for ideas. Your fine pictures show your craftmanship, desire, and untold hours of planning creating your fantastic layout. Gads the work we do to have fun Huh…I really love the bridges, also remember your modifications to the big blue on (cant spell it LOL). Just got one question…Where’s the tunnel picture…LOL…Great job…John

Art,

Are you taking off south for the winter? Or will there be a ‘layout tour’ stop for the TCD at you house this year?

Jim

BTW - the work is GREAT!

Amazing Art, really makes me want to get restarted on something.

A real inspiration thanks for posting.

Ken.

It has all been said the those responding so far, Art, but your rendering is remarkable. It stands out as a real achievement, one of vision and focus. It would be quite a treat to watch you operate it and to see others’ reactions as they watch your trains negotiate all the curves and grades.

I would be bad just to stand in that corner!

Art, you have tremendous modeling skills. I’ve looked forward to Kimm’s Kanyon updates ever since you started. When you first started stacking up the foam I was sceptical about the end result, but it sure is fantastic. I’m a believer in foam scenery now!

Art

You can tell you had fun doing this scene and that it was well thought out.

I think it’s the best i’ve ever seen ! It deserves to be published so all can see it !!!

Great work!! thanks for showing!

Watching your layout grow almost makes me feel like it’s my layout. It certainly has been an inspiration in my current plans.

Yes very well done, a agree with others it is worth publishing.

Wow… simply wow…

Art,

The world you’ve created is dramatic and beautiful!

Finally a distance view. The work is terrific. You have more time invested in bridges and trestle’s than most people have in an entire layout. Keep going !

GLORIOUS!!! [bow]
