As stated in another post, I’m putting the roads down on my American Flyer S gauge layout. I used the black foamboard and I’m satisfied with the results, but it looks like “new” black top and I want to have a more “used” look. For the berms, I cut the edges at a slope, not being overly careful to be “perfect” then brushed glue on the slope and sprinkled sand in the wet glue. Let it dry then vacuumed up the excess. Turned out better than I hoped. Now to give the road a worn appearance.
Thanks
Jim
What happens to roads is the tires wear the asphalt off the aggregate which is never black so they take on a gray appearance. Even the areas that don’t get much tire traffic do that so a gray color is called for. Then you can go back with a fine point magic marker and draw in seams and repairs like when they pour molten tar into cracks to seal them Add some patches and pothole fillings and it will look much better. i always make my roads from plaster with a form to put a crown in them
Jim,
I’ve been learning how to do roads as of late and a nice light gray color is Model Masters flat Gull Gray.
I don’t remember where I picked this link up, but I think it might be what you’re after. Check it out;
This may be what I’m looking for. I’ll try it out. Thanks
Jim
