Man Killed by frieght in Lombard

From the Daily Herald Website The Lombard Police Department, the DuPage County Coroner and the Union Pacific Railroad are investigating the death of a man struck by a freight train on the Burlington Northern tracks near 244 E. St. Charles Road in Lombard late Sunday night. The incident occurred at 6:49 p.m., officials said. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene. Coroner officials said the male has been identified but are withholding the name pending family notification. They are asking anyone with details of the accident or information regarding the incident contact the Lombard Police Department’s non-emergency number at (630) 620-5955. The weird thing is I was railfanning the day before in the same spot… Colin

One thing contradicts the other…shouldn’t it read Union Pacific in both cases?

I honestly dont know, thats just how I copied it from the website, I guess it should

Trackage Rights.

What coborn said, probably shared trackage. Another loss of life by train, seems we read about this way too much.

No, just a editing/ fact checking issue from the Herald. The line thru Lombard is UP trackage. There is no BN trackage rights on that line that I know of. I doubt the BN has any power that could even lead on that trackage due to cab signal issues.

No, it’s not shared trackage. It’s Union Pacific track and the only freight trains on it are Union Pacific. The Burlington Northern hasn’t existed for more than a decade.

The BNSF tracks are several miles south. (UP does have rights on those BNSF tracks, BNSF does not have rights on the UP tracks.)

This is just some more slip shod reporting by the media. This same local paper is getting a real reputation for inacuracy. A while ago they reported that a local soldier was killed in Afghanistan by mortars being dropped from US Air Force planes.

Yes the meida dose not know anything about railroads maby someone should they should learn more about railroads. A-men to that brother.

Speling, to.

Colin, I understand your being a little creeped out by this–I’ve had the same feeling on quite a few occasions.

The address they gave in Lombard is for the Veterinary Hospital, probably because it sounds better than O’Neil’s Pub (next door). Either way, this location is not very near to any grade crossing, so the victim was probably taking a shortcut across the tracks. This past year the village and the railroad put a few extra no-trespassing signs up along the tracks in this area (they’re roughly paralleled by streets on both sides here), but apparently the signs don’t contain enough teeth–this victim was a trespasser, pure and simple. I can’t wait to hear what outraged local citizens think the railroad should do about this.

As for the paper, maybe I should refer to it by the name of one of its competitors. Trouble is, they’d probably feel complimented.

its just the weird thing is that we changed plans last second and went the day before instead of the day it happened.
