Mantua 2-6-6-2 t logger repair

Hello My dad has this loco and it’s not running to well. So I picked it up last night to look it over for him. The first thing I see is a red wire hanging down in the front drivers. Not to sure where it should go? My first thought it is the power feed for the smoke unit? So I took it apart and can’t figure out how that wire got down there. Now I am wondering if it is a pick up wire? I looked for a wire diagram but no luck. Has anyone had one of these apart and can tell me were that wire should go. It looks like it has a newer can motor in it and maybe a plug or something for dcc. My dad and I are still dc so I don’t know allot about dcc parts and stuff. Thanks and have a nice day Frank

To what is the other end of this wire attached? That would be a clue as to the attachment of the loose end.

As far as I know they don’t have a smoke unit. If you take it apart you will probably see where the wire goes. If you don’t have the parts drawing, you can probably find one on line. Good Luck

On this page, scroll down to the smaller icon of that engine, 2005, and click on the script for each of the pages showing parts.

I don’t know if this will help or not.

Hello Jerryl you are right no smoke unit.

Selector from the print it should be the dcc decoder black wire. But mine is red and it goes back to that plug thing. Could be same wire just different color. It looks like it was never hooked to anything or it broke off clean. I don’t see any marks or connectors for it. Thanks Frank

I suppose it could be that the previous owner did in fact have it decodered, but removed it…or is there a light board in this engine?

Hello My dad bought it new and I am the frist one to open it up. I will get a better look when I get home later. I know it has a front and back light and the front wont come on at all but the back will only when backing up.

Ken I can’t get that link to work.

Thanks for the help Frank

I believe it has directional lighting. The back light will only come on when backing and the front, well, when it’s going forward. Since it does move, it would not appear to me to be a pickup wire. I would guess that it is for the front light , and if it were to occasionally ground to the rail or drivers/ frame would give intermittent performance. Check the light up front and see if it has two wires to it.

0-6-0, sorry the link did not work, just changed to Fire Fox and working the bugs out. Try doing a copy and then paste in your browser. I had to shut down my fire wall to show up. It is a PD F file. It about up grading your engine to make it run better.

It may or may not be of any help.

Hello Ok I figured it out the red wire is a pickup wire. With a closer look at the end I could see a few strands hanging out. They were making contact on a screw. It would run but not very well. But I could not find any pickups. So I will make new pickups from a kaydee spring. The front light is burned out so will get a new one for that. Thank you for all the help Frank
