I have a Mantua 2-6-6-2 tanker kit that i am working on. I test ran it and it runs good but it won’t go across swithches. I’ve tried using jumpers to different parts of the switch and different parts of the engine. I could use some experienced advice.

I’m not familiar with this kit but it sounds like the wheels are out of guage. Have you checked them against the NMRA guage?

One possibility could be that since it is a longer steamer, it will short the switch. This is a common problem with many of the steam engines and Centennial diesels. The shorter the locomotive to move through the switch, the mess likely it is to short. I’m not an Expert on that but I hear of it often enough.

I have 2 other 2-6-6-2’s but with tenders that run throught the switches great. I got the tanker off Ebay and it was partly finished but i took it apart and painted and remotored it. I runs and sounds great until it hits a swithch. I also have one of the new Spectrum Shays that goes through great but an MDC kit shay stops on the switches, too.

Gardentoys, You’ll need to provide a little more information. Does it die at the frog?
Can it make through on a straight pass?. Is it picking the points?

What make of switch? Is it on the low end of the spectrum or is it a premium switch. If it is a plastic-frog #4 snap switch you are probably going to be disappointed with ANY engine going through it. Check your wheel gauge, too.
