I’m looking to purchase several tank cars of various sizes and functions. Which manufactures make the best all around RTO and highly detailed HO tank cars?
I kinda like Walthers “Gold” line. Normally around $30, when on sale, you can get them for $16-$18. I’m sure more expireranced modelers might chime in with better options.

What era? I picked up some very nice Type 21 cars from the first run of the Proto 2000 line. I found them on eBay, though. They were out of production. They’ve announced another run at higher prices, and they are RTR only, no kits. Type 21 cars were steam era tankers.
The era can be from 1975 to now.
Check out Atlas, they have some nice looking tank cars for the era you are interested in…I also noticed that some of the new Athearns are pretty well detailed as well.

I have Athearns and Walthers. The Walthers are fine, I like the Athearns the most. They have all of the grabs installed and they are well detailed. All of my tank cars have Kadee #119 couplers installed.
Athearn and Walthers are the 2 I go with most of the time and they always seem to have a large selection of road numbers.
