As of today there are 33 unpatched Southern Pacific units and 18 unpatched Cotton Belt units on the Union Pacific. Thanks to Ryan “Espeeboy” Martin on Trainorders.com for today’s answer.
Was the Chicago North Western as bad about Keeping engines clean as the Southern Pacific? Were’nt they doing pretty good during the last years before the merger? Please Answer.[;)]
From the town of Monon, Indiana. The Monon’s (CI&L) routes were roughly in the shape of an “X”. One route was pretty nearly North - South with the northern terminal at Michigan City, IN and its southern end at Louisville, KY. The other line ran northwest - southeast from Chicago to Indianapolis. The two lines crossed at the small town of Monon.
The CN’s acquisition of the EJ&E is totally unrelated to the CP’s acquisition of the DM&E/ICE.
The CN may not buy the EJ&E. For one thing STB approval is required and they have yet to issue a ruling on the matter. I believe the STB decision is expected in October at which time they may or may not approve the sale of the “J”. Also many of the suburban Chicagoland towns through which the “J” runs are dead set against the acquisition because of the increased number of trains that will be run by the CN over the line. These communities have banded together and have lined up some pretty influential politicans on their side in opposition to the sale. Even Sen. Obama has come out against the deal. Hunter Harrison of the CN recently stated publicly that the CN may give up the planned acquisition if any required mitigation is too costly or if excessive restrictions are imposed on their operation of the line.
The Chicago burbs better be careful what they ask for…they may get it in more ways than they can understand or are even prepared to think about. Time does not stand still…for a railroad or for a community.
