Market for custom painting

Hi,

I want to get into custom painting and was wondering how much of a market there is for it. I would primarily paint moern day engines in Southern’s tuxedo.

So how much of a market is there

there is a large market for custom paint but if your going to limit yourself, you can forget it, lot more road names than sourthern but now and in past!!!

Unless you are going to be painting older brass steam locomotives. Hardly none at all. The manufacturs have gotten so good with their factory paint schemes. I had tried to start my own business in this field several years ago and failed miserably. Im still trying to pick up the pieces. I worry however that since not very many people cater to the era of my prototype. that Decals will be hard to find since Custom painting in general is on the decline.

I don’t think it is. Just look on eBAy and custom painted fantasy engines go for $200 and upwards. Even non fantasy sells. I saw a SD40-s with BNSF’s new swoosh go for like $300.
