Maryland city seeks two commuter stops less than a mile apart

The extra stop at the race track makes a lot of sense when you consider how many people go to the track to wager on the horses as well as other types of gambling.

Is this a single track line and if so could a long siding solve the problems CSX has with the idea?

It’s currently double track.

I think the new stop at the race track is for expanded commuter parking. Most race tracks are struggling for attendance this days, competition from casinos is really hurting them.

Laurel Horse Race Track has parking.

A place to launch train excursions given the fact coal traffic is down.

They I could just call it the Daily Double and have the race track sponsor them.

This illustrates one of the fundamental problems with passenger transit systems in general. You simply can’t serve everyone’s needs with the same system, when some people are making short local trips and others are making longer distance trips. Either you need a local train that makes lots of stops and is too slow for the longer distance passenger, or you need fast trains that skip the local stops but don’t serve the local passenger. You could have both, but that takes a lot more resources.
