Any recomendations for a product that is good for masking small details like cab windows?
You could try Microscale Micro-Mask. It’s a blue liquid that drys to a rubbery surface. After painting it can be peeled off. It is for use with solvent paints, not water based like acrylics.
You could just remove the windows. Thats what I do, they are easy to pop out and glue back in.
I use Tamiya model masking tape, it comes in many sizes, has a good edge and is easy to mask cab windows with.
I use blue painters’ tape. I find it does a really good job on structures. With a bit of practice, it can be cut to fit small shapes like windows.
Having now built over 25 structures and painted them using blue painter’s tape for masking, I find that it is great for larger area protection from overspray, but have been using the Tamiya masking tape increasingly for small detail masking and for brush painting (by hand) of details. The thickness of the blue tape and the need to use some type of burnishing tool to seat it closely to the surface of the item being painted is an issue. For painting loco shells, the Tamiya is preferable, as it is a thinner material. If the windows are removable in a loco, don’t hesitate to do so, as the clear window generally sits flush withthe interior of the cab and the sills (generally) would assume the same color as the body of the shell where a particular color is being applied. I gave up trying to cut blue masking tape into tiny pieces at least two eyeglass prescriptions ago! Cedarwoodron
