Mason Bogie

Hi guys,

Had an enjoyable weekend bashing a Mason Bogie up from a Stainz and an old Lionel 0-6-0. The Stainz was my very first loco from 1986 and whilst I had mated it up with a tender to become an oil burner I still wasn’t happy with it. I already had a Mason Bogie made up from the Lionel superstructure and an LGB mallet chasis, this had never run very well so it was time for a bash. I took great pleasure in pulling the Stainz to pieces and after much sawing, filing, drilling etc we are almost there. I can’t remember what CC&TC stands for so I thought,
‘Corrales Creek & Troy City RR’[;)] A few pics of the not quite completed loco in the shed.

Quite right John, Capt C, apologies for spelling your name wrong. Goes round corners just great Troy, the rear bogie trails off a pivot and a brass strip loops over the top of the bogie that hangs from a brass rod when the loco is lifted off the track. I’m not really sure what the difference is between a Mason Bogie and a Forney, but I’m having mine as a Mason Bogie!! I don’t think it would look amiss on a bush railway down Johns way, better then a Stainz anytime!!

funely enough quite a few Stainz type locos did end up in Aus.
And on bush railways.
we had all sorts Fowlers, Dubs, Beyer Peacock, North British. Vulcan foundry
Kitson, Baldwin, O&K and local builds as well
But to my limited knowledge no manson bogies…
We did have a 3’6" gauge single Fairley WAGR O class,
And a double Fairley of the same gauge that ran on the first government railway from Geraldton to North Hampton line completed after the lead ran out which is what it was built for dare I say it typical govt procedure.

I think what you have is a Forney, a Mason Bogie both the rear truck AND the front drivers pivot to go thru sharp curves, this is done via a rotating steam joint at the base pivot point of the front wheels. A Forney has a fixed front drive chassis and the rear truck pivots like a normal truck, needless to say a Forney was far more rigid that the Mason Bogie. They both had there pluses and minuses. A Fornay was far more reliable due the the fixed framework, but was very limited on curvatures but this didnt stop them from becoming the predominate type of Lokie on the Maine 2 footers. A Mason Bogie could snake around some pretty tight curves, the Denver & South Park RR was famous for its Masons, the flexable steam joint was an ongoing maintanence headache. Ironically it was alot of the steam joint experimenting done with the Bogies in the late 1880’s that allowed the developement of the giant articulated steamer of the 20th century.

What did you use for the cab/tender body?

Kim that too is quite an impressive build!!! I am glad that this kitbashing and scratch building page is in existance. It just seems like yesterday that it was created!!!

Vic, thanks for that mate, I finally know the difference. The boiler and cab of the loco are an original Lionel 0-6-0 with the back bit scratch built out of styrene a few years ago. Now I’m back into bashing and building I’m having the devils own job finding styrene sheet, when I lived down south it was no problem, the local model shop stocked it. I’ll find it somewhere!
Joe, thanks for that mate, I would appreciate a little advertising hoarding . Always new I’d get my name up in lights!! My local beer is Thwaites Lancaster Bomber, a board advertising that would be wonderful. Perhaps a 40’s wartime theme, ‘Lancaster Bomber, there every night with a full load’.
I got this idea from an actual advert that ran a few years ago for a beer called Spitfire. The advert showed a dog fight with the caption, ‘Spitfire, downed all over England, just like the luftwaffe’. Wonderful!

PS The loco’s a Forney!

After Vics advice on the Mason Bogies I went on the web and found some good sites and then realised that I should have done that before I got the saw out. The original Lionel body must have been copied from a Mason Bogie drawing, inverted V roof extended backwards and four small windows across the front of the cab to name but a couple of similarities. I was cussing myself for making my cab windows larger when I found another pic with similar windows. Looking at the pics I wish I had left the original windows but I can either rebuild them or live with it, not decided yet. The moral of this, research before you drill, saw or cut!

I got a Lionel 0-6-0 recently with the intended purpose on doing a Mason Bogie I posted a question on MLS about anyone doing this conversion before, I got interesting replies, I’ll post a link to it.

Thanks for that Vic, had a visit and a quick read. Solved the styrene problem, my local shop sold it after all. Anyway, had a pleasant afternoon bashing it about and I’ve weathered it and added detail, the bucket does just hang off a hook and hasn’t come adrift on the RR yet.

I have a real problem with weathering.My trams are supposed to be shiny!
I’m glad you’ve got back into scratch/bashing.It really is better.
Any idiot with a lot of money can have stuff straight out of the box.

Gave it a run today, just weathered the Bachmann tank car, much improved now.

To-may-to, To-mot-to [:D][8D]

Nice little Forney. Might want to look at a “Bogie”.

The bogie drive unit swivled under the boiler and well as the tender truck swiveled.

Nice little bash!!
