My question is if there is a recommendation regarding the maximum slope for my 4-4-0 and 2-8-0. None will be pulling more than 6-7 weighted cars ( mix of freight and passenger ). Currently I’d like to go with a 2%. Feeling 3% probably over the limit. I have all the track room available for the 16’ horizontal run up and the additional 16’ run back down again.
Youll be fine with 2%. 3 will be pushing it.

A 4-4-0 should have no real problem with 2% as long as there is sufficient weight on the drivers and not too much on the pilot truck. A 2-8-0 should be able to take 3% with a short train, but the 4-4-0 would probably get slippery unless it has traction tires.
My small tank locos can handle 4-5 cars on a 4% grade - probably as many or more than their prototypes.
