MBTA, state re-evaluating the Green Line
The entire project is going down the tubes. It is less than 9 miles long and they are now projecting a 3 billion dollar cost. the City of Somerville wants Taj Mahal train stations with millions of dollars spent for students to paint murals in every one of the stations. On top of that millions has been spent to build paralell bicycle trails. They started out using just the Northern route out to Medford and tufts university and then they demanded another trunk go to union Square via the Fitchburg tracks. The city wants to redevelop the entire area but it was all built on top of swamp land so flooding in heavy rains is common. They should stick with simple cookie cutter stations and just run the line out to tufts university. Several people have proposed a BRT run to union square on a paved dedicated route and they got shoot down because people don’t want to ride a bus.
It’s the Mass way–nothing gets done until the public has been milked for billions, then it’s no-bid contracts and graft all the way. Then shoddy work, cost over-runs, endless debt.
Way to go, Mass!
