Hello all,
Its been a while since I posted a topic. I need plans for a Mcyler coal dumper and trestle. I’ve been searching the US patent office,HABS/HAER and other sites only to come up dry each time. I’d really like a decent set of engineered schematics or rough drawing of this type coal dumper.
A little history behind this dumper…Built in 1912 to handle the vast amount of coal hoppers in the northern steel mills, power stations and such. Very neat looking dumper, with a run away, switch back track after the hoppers are dumped. I saw a photo on a MRR club out of NJ that the club had built a working model of a Mcmyler dumper.Couldn’t get in touch with anyone from this club to see if they had plans or not.
Can’t you help ???

Hello,
In the Book New York Harbor Railrods in color by Thomas Flagg published by Morning Sun Books there are several pictures of two of them. They where for the Reading I think. It shows eleven color pictures of them (inside and out)and show he sequence of how they dump the coal. Prety interesting. The book is still in print and can be bought from a lot of sources. Book is 52 bucks from the Publisher if you cannot find it any where.
Plus if you like Rail/Marine Modeling in the 50’s the book is very informative.

There was an article in Model Railroader a long time back on building one of these that worked. A friend of mine built one and it worked very well.

Hello,
I know it’s a long shot since this thread is more than 15 years old, but I thought I’d give it a try!
I’m currently researching the McMyler coal dumper that once stood on Pier 18 (Port Richmond, Philadelphia) and came across your post while looking for engineering drawings or schematic plans of the McMyler dumper and trestle system.
Have you ever managed to find any technical drawings, blueprints, or even rough sketches of this type of coal dumper?
For context, I’m studying it from an academic perspective (architecture/industrial heritage) and have so far located references in the Society for Industrial Archeology Newsletter (1984) mentioning the Pier 18 McMyler (built 1923 -24, demolished 1984), as well as comparative imagery from the Port Reading, NJ McMyler.
Any lead or contact you could share would be hugely appreciated !
Thanks in advance,
Rym
