MDC 50' passenger car vents: which hand drill best?

I have about 5 or 6 MDC 50 foot coaches with the tapered roofs but they do not have the holes in roof drilled out for the roof vents. i heard #47 or 48 drill bit is good size to use to drill holes out. are there any hand drills through walthers or micro mark that take #47 or #48 drill bits? any of the hand drills or micro hand drills i see only take drill bits #51 or bigger.

The package w/ the detail parts should give you the drill size. If not use calipers or measure for the fit. If trial sizing, start small, can always open up w/ larger size.

I have one of these but I seldom use it. http://www.micromark.com/precision-micro-drill-chuck-for-cordless-screwdriver,8090.html

The description says it is for a “cordless screwdriver” but as you can see the 1/4" hex will fit just about any larger chuck or magnetic bit holder/tool.

Those smaller sizes are best handled in a pin vice.

IF you have a small cordless drill that has a slow speed maybe you can get away with power drilling very small holes. Sometimes it is better to grip the drill motor in a vice or clamp it to a table and bring the work into the drill for better control.

Once you get the hang of a pin vice the job will go pretty quickly with less chance of bit breakage. Go s-l-o-w-l-y

Good luck, Ed

A regular pin vice ought to handle a #47 pr #48 drill bit. Mine has no trouble with th #50 drill bit I use for a 2-56 tap drill.
