medals

I don’t want to appear stupid, but what is this gig with the medals?

REIchg

Huh? Your questilon makes no sense to me.

post count.

If you “hover” over the medals w/ your mouse it will show the post count. Previous to the recent Forum software changes/ upgrades the post count and member location was shown below the avitar.

I still wish that the location was still available. It used to help to know one’s location when answering posts. I don’t care much about post count other than it does help to identify a poster new to the Forum, especially if they don’t identify themselves as a “newby”. This helps tremendously as how to tailor your response.

Unless there’s yet a higher level that even Jeffrey hasn’t hit, it seems like 3000 and above is all the same level “Ultimate contributor”

These things are usually adjustable in the forum configuration, at least it always was in the software I used. I postulate the current settings are probbaly a little too concentrated on the lower end. I’d also argue that plain numbers have less of the stigma of ‘newbie’ than stars, badges, or medals.

It’s a fun thing that shows how active/long you are the forum.

There’s no deeper meaning.

Enjoy

Just a post count, nothing more. In my case it seems to serve as ammunition for those yelling about me having a big mouth.

I’ll agree that I think we lost some definition in the transition to the medals system. With a post count in the mid-2000’s, I was something like a “Top 200 Contributor” before, with two of the blocks filled in and 4 to go. Now I have 5 silver medals, and in a couple of hundred posts, I’ll max out at 5 gold medals.

And I’d like to get Location back.

But no biggie.

Got a few medals in the Navy myself, but I put 'em in a frame with my rating and other memorabilia. I dust it once a month! More important, is that those of us who post here do so out of a sense of community and mutual respect. There are few places where strangers can become friends the way many of us can. It’s not the “medals”, it’s the fact that one participates! Cedarwoodron

You can always list your location and join date in your signature like I do. Just an idea.

A couple of profile tidbits could be useful:

As mentioned, location, at least country, so for example we won’t be telling any UKians asking about stripping paint off locomotive shells to just get some 90% isopropyl alcohol (apparently that’s somewhat difficult to come by in GB) - possibly could do this automatically via your IP (should be good enough at a region level), so people don’t fill out silly things like “Right Behind You” or “Under Where?”

Also, Perferred modeling scale - this could help with questions like the 1970s pickup models one, where the OP didn’t state his scale - I assumed HO, but it could have been N or O gauge, or even Z. This way, if the OP doesn’t state scale in the question, you can take the perferred scale as the default for your response.

Well, yes, but I know where I am. It’s the other folks I’d like to know about!

Sort of related to the theme here: why would a post count reset? Mine is back at 1 from being in the 20’s. Weird…

Medals? We don’t need no stinkin’ Medals! [:D]

I got mine for “Meritorious Service”. [:-,]

The TSA did that. Don’t waste your time buying an airline ticket. [:-,]

[:-^]

It’s kind of odd, recently I was up to 1212 post count and this morning it is back to 1210, not sure why the program is doing this.

But I guess in the long run it doesn’t really matter

Johnboy out…

Don’t feel bad as I have a post missing. It wasn’t anything of importance but it wasn’t anything that called for deleting either. I think the TSA did it. [:-,]

Part of the regular maintenance is database reindexing, so likely if you catch it at the beginning of a maintenance cycle, things may be incorrect. Before the initial indexing complete when they upgraded, EVERYONE’S post count was missing. Then one day it suddenly was back, after the tons of data that comprise this forum (you can still view REALLY old messages - as seen when someone posts a new reply to a topic from 8 years ago) was finally processed. There’s also a lag from posting until your count is added to, this was true even prior to the upgrade.

You know, that’s a good idea. Maybe we should automatically lock threads that have had no new posts in 2 weeks, a month, something. You still want to be able to search and read them, but if they’ve been dormant for a while, better to start anew than resurrect a dead one.
