Tried some, bonds styrene just like MEK
Harold
OK, so what is it?
MIK, placement, war bonds, just like MLK.
Ole Harold here, must be a “man of few words”.
It is a substitute for Methyl ethyl ketone(MEK), the best agent for bonding styrene.
MEK is being phased out.
Harold
OK, we know it’s a MEK substitute. What’s the name of it.
That is the name of the product

Thanks. Kleen Strip. Now I know what to ask for. Auto parts clerks in this part of the country get a real comical dumb look if you ask for something like MEK Substitute. ‘Duh! What? We don’t be carrying MEK no more’ even if it’s right on the label.
I picked up a product from a plastics supplier called Methylene Chloride, which they sell for bonding plastics.
I bought a litre can for less than a couple of bottles of Tenax would cost.
I was taking, about a 2 hour nap,for I get up really early,so I sit at my desk now,log back on to the Forums and the first thing,I read is this…I think I will go back and take another nap and see in my dream’s,if I missed, something? For surely it appears, that I did…[%-)] [%-)]

Isn’t MEK what doctorwayne uses as a glue substitute when he builds his structures?
I think he buys it by the gallon.
Rich
MEK was the original bonding agent set forth in Al Armitage’s “Case for Styrene” back in Oct-Nov 1959 Model Railroader. Back then Duco and model airplane glue were state of the art.
Harold
Rich,
I could be wrong,but I thought,it was Lacquer thinner,but what do I know,no badges,sniff,no post count,sniff sniff…[:'(]
Cheers,
Frank [(-D]
Yes, Doc Wayne uses lacquer thinner.
Harold,
In that time period and before, you could use Ambroid wood glue and Dope for painting…You could really get Dopey, using that stuff…[:P]
Cheers,
Frank
Let’s not even discuss the carbon tetrachloride you were advised to clean your tools with, or the shredded asbestos that made the most excellent scenery material … Folks lament that there are not enough youth in the hobby but the wonder of it is that there are geezers!

Frank may be an old geezer, but you ought not to call him that. [(-D]

.
My Dad used to refill my Testors liquid bottles with MEK, and I used to have a spray booth (really a cardboard box) Right next to the oil burning furnace down the basement! It’s amazing somehow that I made it past puberty with brain cells intact!
Actually almost all the products I use today should be appended with ’ - Subistute’
There was a big scare that our favorite Lacquer thinner; DuPont 3608s was downgraded & much slower acting one, in the early 2k’s…
I can’t get the Catalyst for my favorite HoC Clear, or that Clear formula for that matter, anymore.
On & on, & on…
I do spray, still today, near my NG fired furnace, without issues.
-or- Perhaps this is the… Chad - Subsistute …typing… Hmmmmm…
