Good Question. [}:)] [:)]
Some of our Tennessee people should be able to answer this question. Memphis isn’t that far and one of these days I might want to go there and railfan. So who can give us some heads up for the Memphis area? [:)]
There may be some personal safety considerations in Memphis, related to a high crime rate. You might be better off watching inbound and outbound Memphis rail traffic in Northern Mississippi.
Here are a couple of websites with information on the railroads in the area:
An old post but here’s some info. First off don’t let media hype but the paranoia into you. Memphis, like all major cities, has its bad parts of town. If one goes into any new area unaware than shame on them.
Anyway, the prime spot in Memphis would have to be Kansas Street off Carolina. This point begins a six track stretch into town (E to W) for four railroads (UP,BNSF,CSX & NS) known as Broadway with CSX & NS beginning/ending here and UP & BNSF coming in from the west. CN also has a single track crossing here N to S.
UP and BNSF cross into Memphis here from the west over the Mississippi River on the Harahan Bridge (UP double track) and Frisco Bridge (BNSF single track). 60+ trains a day through this part of town.

Thanks for the info. [:)]
This could very well help someone, maybe even me one of these days. [;)]
Hopefully one of these years I will come to Memphis and do some railfanning. I plan to also go to Jackson and Nashville. But it won’t be this year. [:(]

Jim forgot his manners. [:(]
WELCOME to the forums. [:)]
I know you will enjoy them. [;)]
Thanks Jim.
If you’re ever in the need for some more info on railfanning in Memphis just let me know.

UP has a very busy intermodal ramp across the river in Marion Ark. BNSF is over in Harvard Ark as well.
Quite a bit of traffic runs through UP’s Marion Intermodal Port and BNSF’s Harvard yard in Marion, AR that never make it across the river into Memphis.
Marion is just minutes from Memphis.
UP is beginning to run some directional traffic through their intermodal ramp. Eastbound from Bald Knob, AR on the Memphis Sub into the yard and westbound on the Brinkley Sub to Pine Bluff out of the yard. The access to the two subs is at Presley Junction on the Memphis Sub via leased track from BNSF (Hulbert Lead) that runs N-S through West Memphis, AR.
