Sometime ago I picked up a package of corregated metal fencing made
by Alloy Forms. I now come to find out that they no longer make it.
I’ve searched around and can’t find any. Does anyone know who might
make either corregated metal fence or ready made chain link fence?
For corrugated metal fencing I used Cambells corrugated metal , it came in packages precut to almost the correct height for a ten foot fence. It appear they don’t produce that particular size anymore. I recently bought some ready made chain link that is brass. I’ll have to look up the manufacturer. It’s really nice , but not cheap. Found it.
Hope this helps… For chain link fence, I use ‘‘Tulla’’ from Walmart. (It is the stuff that bridal vails are made of). For the post I use a stiff wire with about a 45 deg. angle on top for the berbed wire. If you need more info, let me know. Mike
I also need to install a LOT of chain link. I’ve tried one type that uses stuff similar to the wedding veil material, and also some stainless steel (?) stuff…I think that was from a company called SS Structures, or somethng like that…I’m not home so can’t check. The latter looked a bit better.
I have looked at the Walthers web pic of the brass stuff before, but with so much to install, the price would be unworkable.
Question to Mike…the wedding veil stuff I assume is pretty flimsy / not stiff. When do you put the chain link material on the posts - before you install the posts, or after? If you do it after, I’m assuming you can get it nice and snug (not rippled). Have you ever tried to stiffen the mesh so it is easier to work with (and in this way, install the fence as a complete unit, rather than posts first and mesh second)? Thanks for your thoughts. Cheers.
That’s the way fencing companies do it so why would the model world be different?
Now the wedding veil stuff holes are a little to big so if possibel I reccomend getting a finer mesh. the best is mesh so the holes are just big enough for and HO scale figures foot to slip through.
The other neat thing about the “veil”…it comes in a “silver” color, perfect for fences. Also, if you are using foam for your sub roadbed, you can use small, long pins (you can get these at Michaels or other craft stores and bend the tops at a 45 degree angle. The cost is great, a buck or two for the pins and less than 50 cents for the material. Compared to $15 or so for one of the SS Scenics, Walthers, Alloy Forms or other companies that make fencing.
I gave him ready made products , that’s what he asked for. I too have use the wedding veil material. I lay out my posts on a sheet of glass over the veil that is stretched just a bit over the glass. I then use a small amount of CA at each post and hit it with acelerator, it set immediately. I do this in one foot sections. I paint the veil before assembly, that does give it some body, a little less flimsy.
Thanks to all for the useful information. I at one time had
considered using the veil material but wasn’t sure how to fasten it to
the posts. Now with your suggestions it has become much clearer. Thanks
again. Bob
[#ditto] Thanks for the suggestions. By the way, has anybody ever tried window screen mesh material? I haven’t looked but assume you can get it in different mesh sizes. Cheers.
I’ve never seen window screen small enough to look good, the veil material is available in tiny mesh that looks good. I bought a yard of it that was 2 ft. wide. cost about 2 dollars in a craft store. Thats enough to make 50 ft (real size) of fence.[:D]
