Hey… i’m looking into a few of the Alpine Division Scale Models coal mine kits, because they’re the only ones in production anymore (The one I really want is the Industrial Heritage kit used on a 4x8 project railroad from MR a while ago).
anyway, do these need to be soldered together? or is there another way to construct them? Also, whats the best way to paint them?
I like the 2nd one, the Red Lake Hillside Mine, but I can get the first one for a really, really good price, and the first one can allow me expansion for a larger layout. What I’m thinking of doing is geting the Buckhorn Mine (first link) and scratchbuilding the 2nd one out of styrene because its small enough that I think I could do it. any ideas where I’d get the right parts?
Those Alpine Division Scale Models kits are the next generation of the old Suydam metal kits that gained original popularity in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Yes, soldering is the primary method of attachment, however, last week there was a thread that someone started and they reported some success with using a gap filling CA, but I cannot remember the thread.

By coincidence I also wanted to build the Red Lake Mine and found it impossible to obtain. I did however buy two of the Buckhorn mine kits. It looks like it will easily kitbach into a similar structure.
I have the Red Lake Hillside mine partially assembly, I realized it wasn’t going to fit my needs. You are welcome to it if you would like, free of charge, I just ask to pay for the shipping. It has NOT been soldered, I used glue to temporarily hold the walls together.
