It’s on CNN right now. 1 dead, 76 injured. It was the big double-decker commuter train from Juliet.
Darn. [:O][:(]
Where were the Space Mouse and son at the time, who is your aliby witness?
I’m sorry to much CSI of late. This really is terrible, just when we need more people riding trains we have an accident that pushs more death and carnage onto the highways!
Will
That is so sad!
I really hope people are still going to take the train. It seems railway accidents are happening more and more these days.
On the other hand, highways are more clogged, and there are far more automobile accidents than train accidents.
Another passenger train jumps the tracks…This is very sad.[:(][sigh]

A witness in a car saw a support on the viaduct colapse as the train was crossing.
I hadn’t watched the news today, but my mom called and told me about the accident. As far as I know, Metra has a good safety record and few if any incidents like this. I’m so sorry.
Tracklayer
Ouch! Hope there are not too many fatalities. I rode a lot of the trains to and from O’Hare Airport when I was working a contract there back in 1998-99. Pretty safe and fast transport for me.
ya know
When a train accident happens anyware in the country its in the PAPER
I mean car accidents
Theres like at least 100 a day
Ya never here about those alll over the country
People go with what they here
If they here a train accident they dont ofen ake the train much
But they rarely hear about car accidents in the paper or on the news
They dont know so they dont car
That’s because cars don’t carry hundreds of people.
Too bad,eh? Kinda sucks for Metra.
Wow, again I’m left without proper speech.
Trainboy
engineer was speeding, according to NSTBand “blackbox”,said report,“train was in 10 mph speed zone, was doing 59 mph”
According to CNN the train was doing 69mph when it crossed over to another track. It was going 59mph over the speed limit for the crossover. The track had been inspected just the day before the accident and was found to be safe. Looks like human error. [:(]
Final total is two dead - both young women under 30 years of age and the first two fatalities on Metra trains ever. The engine #309 derailed at the same location last year.
How many people need to be asleep to do 70 mph in a 10 mph zone?
Engineer to fireman: “Hey Vern, watch this.”
The engineer had just finished 40 days of training to be an engineer on Amtrak, he had been an engineer for years on Freight engines. It is a 10mph zone, he was doing 70 according to the black box. Did he have a heart attack? Was he asleep or on drugs? Was it equipment malfunction? I have to believe that he understood speed signals having been an engineer for years on freight servioce. Only the investigation will point to the cause. It is too bad that two people had to die, accidents are avoidable.
It may be a bit early to judge. From what I’ve heard the straight stretch of double track main that he was on was rated for 70 mph. It was the crossover to the other main that was either rated 10 or 15 mph. His initial statement was the signal he saw was high green which meant that he wasn’t expecting the interlock to be set for the crossover. I wouldn’t totally rule out an electrical/mechanical glitch. I find it hard to believe that an engineer, even with mostly freight experience, deliberately runs a non-high speed crossover at 70.
