I know Metra shipped off most of their F40C’s, save for 611 and 614 which are now in reserve service (and active from what I’ve been hearing for the past couple weeks). Has anyone heard the disposition of the rest of the units? I heard that they were shipped to NRE for re-gearing. Any truth to that and has anyone seen evidence of this?
I know a few things have changed since my earlier post, being that the KCS deal fell through. I also hear that 611 & 614 are back in service as of a couple days ago. Does anyone have any info on the rest of the fleet. Last I knew 610 was in Dixmoor, IL, and the rest went to Kansas City, but then I’ve also seen pictures of them in Alorton, IL. Sadly it looked like a couple of them have had parts removed. Have they been canibalized, or (wishful thinking) is it part of a rebuild?
Metra 611 is already back in daily service. So far its been trailing behind a F40PH but that can change any day at any time. They’re probably just making sure it doesn’t have any problems. Last I heard about 614, it is getting prepared to come back into service as well, possibly as soon as next week Several of the oldest Metra F40PHs are going out for a rebuild so the F40Cs are filling the gap in power. They are planning on sending 5 F40PHs at a time to VMV so there is a potential the F40Cs may be back for a bit. 610 is still at Dixmoor as of a few weeks ago. The rest were sold to HLCX but they haven’t been seen for at least three years. It is unknown what happened to them.
I know Metra reactivated them while they rebuild the F40s. Any idea how long it will take? I’m sure that when they’re all done the F40Cs will be back in storage if not disposed of for good.
