Very interesting. The government railroad is being investigated by government instead of the operator. Probably because somebody in management, on the government payroll, told him he had better run that train or else. Which proves the union is completely worthless when it comes to protecting their members and safety. When all of this is done, nothing will change, as government always protects its own. As for PTC, if it is so great, then why is it so far behind schedule with massive cost over-runs being incurred by the private sector freight railroads? Just so government run commuter roads can then grab the technology when it is finished and slap it on their stuff without paying for any of the costs. PTC would have not made any difference because it is still being developed. You can’t expect non-functioning equipment to somehow become instantly functional before it is completed. Wait a minute. Yes you can if you live in one of those alternative realities.
After the law suits and legal fees are paid it should be a bit obvious that some sort of positive train control is needed now and maybe not that expensive when viewed in terms of human lives. Now how about the 85 citizens killed daily in USA motor vehicle crashes…
Maybe the volume here outta be toned down.
Far from being one to advocate any particular point of view current regulations may not have necessarily prevented this accident.
How about research to implement a variant of established technology that Amtrak and European railroads use ? Something to override mistakes that can happen with manual operation.
Sure beats doing nothing at all.
I second Mr.Trudo’s comments. Some people don’t like government intrusion with an impending deadline for PTC.
Something’s needed that may prevent these tragedies.
The rail industry will never do it on their own. Out of pocket costs are their only priority.
Does the $9,000,000 include the $150,000/p.a. paid to the engineers to sleep on-the-job, big turkey dinners aside? Thanks, ACRE. Youse guys be total s-bags!
Uh, oh! A southbound (NYC - East-West, New Haven - East) 90-degree re-connection is now being proposed at Spuyten Duyvil to get M-NR Harlem and New Haven trains into Penn Station. Inconvenient, as the Spuyten Duyvill swing bridge opens about once-a-day to let a private ‘stinkpot’, with a tuna tower, pass. Weld the bridge shut! Maybe restore some stations on the West Side Line. Never rode it, me. Dunno where they were.
A pretty expensive speeding ticket
Those 4 lives lost are going to cost the MTA at least $25,000,000 + based upon what the Staten Island ferry disaster final settlements were. In both cases it was “employee negligence” that caused these accidents. Regarding the comment “the Spuyten Duyvill swing bridge opens about once-a-day” is not true. Large tourist boats like the Circle Line alone cause 4-8 openings a day. Additional there are other openings daily mainly for commercial tug traffic.
