This makes so much sense. It should attract more riders to Metro-North and additional business to Enterprise & Zipcar. Why drive from city to far suburbs when you can take the train and then drive locally.
Maybe Amtrak should do this!
Landon, that would require some “out-of-the-box” thinking on the part of Amtrak so don’t hold your breath. Afterall, they didn’t do this in the 1950s which is where the Amtrak business plan is grounded.
To make Amtrak travel easier, there need to be more Amtrak stations with easy rent a car access.
We go to FL often and get off at Orlando because it is the only Amtrak station in Fl with a car rental on site.
I can name on one hand the Amtrak stations with on site rental cars.
Does anyone actually think about what a traveler needs when they arrive at a destination by train?
I travel to Northwest Ohio frequently. I call Hertz a week ahead and they leave the car at the Toledo station and they give the contract and keys to the stationmaster. When I leave, I simply park the car in the Amtrak lot and leave the keys and paperwork with the stationmaster. I then call Hertz and tell then the car is ready to be picked up. I’ve been doing this for years and never had a hitch. Also, there are no additional fees.
The first time I did this I needed to fax an image of my driver’s license to the local Hertz agency, but they keep it on file and I never needed to do it again.
Maybe the Toledo Hertz is extra accommodating, but I bet may other destinations would be happy to offer the same service.
