There sems to be a little confusion here. According to the version of this story that I read in the Washington Post an inbound (southbound) train for Los Angeles control cab car hit the SUV, not the northbound train. The diagram that accompanied the story showed the SUV was at a grade crossing; is this correct?
Were all of the injuries and deaths confined to the southbound train?
How seriously were the cars of the northbound train damaged when the cars of the southbound train sideswiped it? A news report said the cars of the southbound train buckled, when in fact it looked as if a few of its cars jackknifed.
Before forming any further judgements I want to see what if anything the NTSB has to say about the safety of push-pull trains. As others have pointed out the use of push-pull passenger train operation has been around for a long time. After all you have a similar situation with electric MU’s, subways, and RDC’s where the operator runs the train from a cab in the front car.
Worst rail disaster since the Illinois grade xing job with Amtrak and a tractor-trailer----well, and both were caused by a motor vehicle. Makes grade separation a great idea----even the hiway nuts might agree to use hiway money for grade xing separations.

Firstly may i offer my sympathy to the families of all passed away and injured. Why cant people who want to take their own lives just take the tablets and lie down.Im a driver in the U.K and i had a guy jump in front of my train at 110mph a year ago now.It will never leave me.
On the point of push pull trains. When they first appeared here in the U.k there was a derailment of an Edinburgh to Glasgow train being pushed ; caused by a heard of cow’s, also with loss of life. After that , the lead coach you drive from was waited down with concrete ballast in case of re occurence. From experience though you still felt safer in the loco.
On the point of the car driver, there was also a similar incident over here recently of a High Speed Train de railing at 100 mph after hitting a suicide driver. The train would’nt of been so bad and i know there would nt of been as many killed if there were not a set of switch points just after the crossing which threw the train all over.It does nt matter how many c c t v camera’s you have on crossings it could still happen if the person has decided on doing it.Over here on my track they have moved the speed up to 125 mph and they are trying to eliminate most road/rail crossings on it ( west coast main line) which can only be a good thing
I still cant understand the fact that he decided not to do it and ran off. Why didnt he drive off

I had read they were looking to push 1-st degree murder charges on the guy who caused it. After the accident he slashed both his wrists and stabbed himself, but they took him in to a hospital and he’s in stable condition, under a suicide watch. A sad day for many in cali…
Actually, I believe it was verified that he slashed his wrists and stabbed himself, PRIOR to placing his SUV on the tracks. Never the less, a tragic outcome here. Bless all those who have lost loved ones.[8D]
RE: The USC professor. He must be allied with Wendell Cox from Texas. Cox will speak and lobby against any rail project. He also is employed as a concrete industry lobbiest. Enough said. Maybe they should check what bridge piers and concrete ties are made from.
The professor must be in the same category as Linus Pauling. Several years ago Pauling was advocating a cure to the common cold-massive doses of vitamin C. With Pauling’s stature he got a wide following. It needs to be pointed out that Pauling was a very renound neucular physist and not a nutrition expert. Simply he was speaking out of his area of expertise. Is this what the USC professor is doing? Is his professorship in English or history? (No offense meant to the English or history experts of the world).
