mice and trees

Hi, as I get into this tree making a question pops up… I have a
mice problem, have done everything I can to control them but they
keep popping up. The question I have is, has anyone come up with a
spray for the trees that would discourage the little critters.
The trees featured on this site should present no problem but I went
to the site for making trees using “Super Trees”. Cool and helpful
site but I notice on the trees there are left overs from what may
have been seed pods. I pick these off, spray the tree with adheasive
and then sprinkle with ground foam. I am then spraying with hair
spray.
The hair spray smells great after the glue but I wonder about it
also…
My wife has never had problems with mice in her hair but I wonder
about all of the above.
Years ago I went out in the fields and cut some weeds, sprayed them
with paint( had pods ) and one day the mice came in and logged the
area !
So I am going to try to outrun them if I can this time.
No I am not going to get a cat, we have rattlesnakes that are suppose
to be taking care of this type of problem out there but I’m sure my
family won’t let me open the doors and let them patrol the layout
room. Would make an exciting operation session. You war game guys
might want to consider this possibility I know when I play paint
ball they are on my mind when I dive behind that log for
protection !!!

Anyway what do we think on this one ?

Why don’t you try using D-Con mouse and rat killer. Or some traps.

maybe you can hide some rat poison under the trees when you do the ground foam work…how big do you think that is…a 1:1 mouse on a 1:87 layout?..you could make a movie or TV show…Attack of the Gaint Rodents or something like that…chuck

glue traps

NOW theres one for MythBusters!!!

Try the anti-deer/rodent solution that one sprays on shrubs and bulbs that deer will eat. It is called ROPEL. Also, set two or three of the 99-cent wooden wire traps baited with Kraft Peanutbutter. Use a toothpick and insert the PB INSIDE the little copper bait loop. They will attempt to get at the inside of the loop and SNAPPP!!!

From your post, you have tried everything to control them (yet people are still suggesting things [xx(]) and you want to treat your tress with something that will keep the mice away from them. Trouble is, everything I can think of would be just as offensive to humans.

It seems to me that you have deal with the rodent problem in order to save your trees. I had mice once – and with a cat in the house that was a good mouser! Mouse traps were working fine but they just kept coming. Once I traced just how they were getting in the house, and plugged the hole, the problem went away.

Mice usually just come in for food and leave. If they can’t get in, then they will move on.

Rat poison is a deep green color. If you crumble it up and spread it around, it will look like grass. The effect is gradual. The mice have to feed on it for a couple of weeks before it takes effect. Also, check your walls for any openings, especially clearance spaces where pipes go thru the walls. Mice can squeeze thru incredibly small openings, so seal these gaps.

I had a mouse / rat problem in my garage a few years ago… Poison and sticky traps seemed to solve it, though the sticky traps weren’t where I left them when I found the dead mice stuck to them… They must have jumped like mad to try and escape… The problem however wasn’t that they could get in, but that they Wanted to get in… Something is attracting them to both your property and your layout. Food, materials to build and nest in, easy hiding places, etc. Cure the cause and the problem will likely disappear. I don’t think a cat is a very good idea either… Might even add to the problem when fluffy starts batting your trees around off of the layout…

Good luck,
Jeff

You need to solve the problem. Look around where your pipes and lines come into the building. They sell these crome metal rings that go around them to block any openings.
You’d be surprised how small a crack those little suckers can fit through. I use those, glue traps with peanut butter on them, and Decon.( and a cat).My cat eats 7 or 8 mice a day.

use decon, we had the same problem, it works verra well

It is called a hose pet. AKA 1" to the foot CAT. Go to the humane society an get one. There great pets and guranteed mouse discouragers.

Rat poison, yeah, that’s slap brilliant. Believe me, you want nothing more than to smell dead rats decomposing in all kinda places you can’t get to. I think that’s the answer, no doubt. You could try this:

But then, as usual, I walk to the beat of a different drummer than most do here, so what the hell do I know???

I had a rat problem so I put out the green pizen blocks from wal mart.they crawl away and die after they get sick. They come in when it rains or to get away from the cat.Havnt had any more rats but I keep the pizen out all the time.

if you’re not willing to go with godzilla the cat, then i would lie in wait until their leader showed himself, and blow him away with your paintball gun. the leaderless hoarde will disperse in confusion, word will get around, and your layout will be considered a bad place to be by the rodent population.

poison, by it’s nature, is indiscriminate. i have kids and animals i like running about, and don’t need them killed off quite yet.

a rodent problem indicates something is out of balance and needs to be corrected. commonly, certain folks think they are doing the world a favor by killing all the rattlesnakes they meet, and never relate back when the rodents take over.

I use Victor glue traps and they work fine. You didn’t state if you have pet food around. The mice love it. And yes the sticky traps may not be where you left them. If one gets moved and not found by sight it soon will be by nose. Phil
