I was browsing eBay as I am sometimes wont to do and I found a Micro Trains N scale engine at good price. I’d never heard of Micro Trains so I was wary.
So in the words of my daughter:

If I am not mistaken, wern’t Microtrains a spin off from Kaydee in some way? I seem to remember something about brothers or partners falling out, and spliting the business into Kaydee (sorry Kadee, I have enough of their couplers, you would think I could spell the name right!!) for HO and bigger, and Microstains for N scale and smaller? Certainly, they have a decent reputation in the world of Z scale for producing some of the better US protype rollingstock.
Mouse, I’ve never run an MT locomotive, but I can attest that their N scale rolling stock is very good. If you’re looking for good N scale diesels, the LifeLike ones that populate my layout run wonderfully, and I have an Atlas N Trainmaster that I haven’t yet run much, but it seems pretty good.
Micro Trains is a big name in N scale. I’m sure their locos are probably top notch.

Keith and Dale Edwards started Kadee way back when…
This is how the K and D, along with the E became Kadee, or simply KD.
They decided to separate their scales and started Micro Trains for the N-Scale and Kadee stayed with H-O.
It’s not Kaydee, it’s simply Kadee!!!1

The Micro-Trains engines I believe are made by Life-Like and painted by M-T to sell. They are good engines as I have a couple. I also only collect M-T rolling stock as it seems, in my opinion only, the best out there. N scale has come a long way and the other manufacturers are doing great things, so don’t worry about build quality as much as how the person took care of it. Flyinpig
Micro Trains cars are consistently among the best in N-scale. Their couplers are sort of the standard which other N-scale knuckle couplers are compared. I’ve not used their locomotives, but the reviews I’ve read are always positive. I can’t imagine they are anything but top-notch. The FTs are also convertible to DCC by swapping out the light board with a decoder board (Digitrax DN163M0). Brooklyn Locomotive Works is selling FT A-B sets for $150 and up, so if you are seeing them substantially below that and it is a reputable seller, I’d go for it.
Like everybody else has said, MTL spawned from Kadee.
And I’ll bet they come with Micro Trains couplers, too!
Two steamers, a diesel and 6 pieces of rolling stock just sold for $35. Unfortuately you answers were all about 4 hours late. No matter. Thanks anyway. I’ve been watching fish swim by in the pond since my wife cut me off anyway.
MicroTrains does put together small sets of another maker’s locos with their own freight cars. You can get some deals on their TableTopTrains.
MicroTrains has also painted some LifeLike locos. The GP20 and the SW units make excellent models. Having them done by MTL means you don’t have to convert couplers. for that you pay a price.
For about 2 years now, MicroTrains has also sold their own FT. You may find these older units on *bay. They compete with InterMountain FT’s. Both are very good loco’s. You pay your money, make your own choice. Limited choice keeps prices high. An AB set will easily pull the States series. They have sold Z scale locos for some time.
The best Nscale cars far and maybe the finest details too and nearly at scale (remenber it’s 1/160 ratio!)
