Midnite Track Crossing with Beer and Girlfriend

Sad to once again see dumb (drunk?) people crossing tracks despite flashing lights etc., this time at midnight, carrying beer, and following girl.

I don’t like to sound callous, but Amtrak and railroads in general seem to be involved in the selection of a lot of candidates for the Darwin Award this year.

Not really. It’s just that the whole country gets told about every one.

By way of contrast, we had an, “Inattentive driver runs red, kills pedestrian in marked crosswalk.” last week. This is probably the first mention that will make its way out of Clark County, NV.

Of course, that one (fillintheblank) driver wasn’t part of a government-subsidized national system, so her ineptness wasn’t news in Bangor or San Diego (both of which have probably had their share of similar incidents.)

My sympathy goes out to the train crew, the first responders and any innocent bystanders. NOT to the girl. If she was the subject’s girlfriend, or even a ‘just now’ pickup in a bar, SHE should have stopped for the warning devices - and thereby prevented her boyfriend’s death.

Alcohol and machinery don’t mix, as the heavy majority of us learn early. I don’t get any pleasure from these sorts of stories. Pain left around like the dashed remains. Pain for the girlfriend (and regret), for the crew, for those who had to bag the body,…aaachh!!!

My total agreement. Mix the non perfect actions of humans and the elements in the above case…and all kind of possibilities, and the outcome is not predictable. And when the possibilities as in this case come together, too often the resullt is tragedy

It probably won’t change either. But it is certainly terrible, and so sad for all involved.

Edit: Note my post a few days ago over in the “Diner”…An actual similar incident happened last week right here in Muncie.

Both comments, are Spot On!

Darwin is the real winner. Proving once again,
