I am thinking of buying an older Lionel steam engine (1989 Reading 4-6-2, 18004) that features " electronic whistle and Mighty Sound of Steam". what is this? How does it sound? Anybody have any experience with this type of system?[?]
Here is a thread to a posting I did a few weeks ago. I beleive the sound system is the same. Click on the video to here what it sounds like

Mighty Sound of Steam was an analog synthesized sound board. It used a white noise generator and a voltage controlled occilator to simulate chuffs. Whistle was also analog synthesized. It didn’t sound too bad, better than the digital synthesised sounds in LocoSounds, not as good as PS-1 digitally stored analog recordings in PS-1 and no where near the sound capability of RailSounds or PS-2. Only real problem with MSOS is getting replacements if the board is damaged. Most likely culprit is shorting of main board as double stick foam tape deteriorates over time.
