A lovely day here in the north west UK, half the railway in heavy shade, half in lovely sun. The head on shot of the mike is on a part of the railway that is going to be demolished this weekend, it’s being lifted to decking height to allow me to operate right upto the fence and make it a little easier on these old(ish) bones of mine.
Com’on Jack, thats like saying only Real Men like Budweiser, which is absolute [censored] beer wise. Opera is like wine, if you like it, you dont give a fig if others dont like it[;)]
Didnt you ever date? Girls dig opera, ballet, symphony, all that stuff! Maybe its just the girls I dated…Anyway going to see Porgy & Bess by Gershwin later this year with the missus, maybe Wagners Tannhuaser if I can get tickets. Only seen a few that made me search for the earplugs, namely anything by Verde - woof! La Traviata is bearable but Il Toriedor should be renamed Il Terrible! I just kept hearing the Bavarian beerhall ompapa polka beat that underlays everything he ever wrote!
PS Gilbert & Sullivan is not Opera, not by a long shot! Thats like saying Shaffers is good beer![(-D]
Yeah yeah I know: theater and girls, I know how it works, I’ve got 4.5 kids.
Ok, I’ve seen in theater Hello Dolly! (4X), Fiddler on the Roof (3X), Riverdance, Cats, Phantom of the Opera, King and I (2X), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Macbeth (5X), Othello, Comedy of Errors, Midsummer’s Night Dream, Hamlet, and dozens of other minor plays, some good, some bad. I’ve been to the Harrison Opera House several times, but still can’t “do” opera, I just don’t get it and I’m 1/2 Italian too. I’ve even drank Milwaukee’s Best.
THERE! HOPE YOUR HAPPY! NOW THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS!
By the way, it’s SCHAEFER’S beer, it’s the one beer to have when you’ve had one too many…
Mr Gilbert is the driver of the Mike and Mr Sullivan is the fireman! Beer is, of course, finest English beer to an abv of around 4% to make it a good session beer, straw coloured and hoppy on the taste. I’m afraid, gentlemen, that anything else - as mentioned - is a poor imitation and not worth discussing. Saying that there are a now quite a few good bottle conditioned American beers from small town breweries now on sale in the UK and they are very nice, see, you can do it!! Just back from the pub, 4 pints of Thwaites Lancaster Bomber and now a bowl of pea soup, yum yum.
OMG! Hello Dolly 4 times?
Do you break out in Judy Garland songs when your happy also?
[(-D]
And the only way I can taken to anything by that drivelmeister Andrew Lloyd Weber is by tranquilizing me, then tazering a few times till I’m unconsciuous, then tying me with chains and locking me in a steel box and welding it shut, then you just might be able to get me into the theater… I looooooooooth that guys stuff.[}:)]
Jack you just have to find the right Opera, best first time Opera I can recommend is Mozarts “The Magic Flute” its fun, and not too long, so its a good place to start. Anything from Mozart is usually good but the lenth can be a turn off, the Marraige of Figaro is 4+ hours! Also PBS recently did a telecast of "the Magic Flute&
Don’t forget Vic, that there Irish stuff is the original nitro keg. Drink enough of any nitro beer & your supposed ‘hangover’ is a mild case of the bends - all those little bubbles in your bloodstream! Saying that I do have a pint now and then!
I know the secret of English “warm beer”. Refrigerators in the UK are made by Lucas. The conundrum comes when you try to ebay a Lucas fridge, can you advertise it as “works perfectly” and still be believable that it is a Lucas product???
Vic, drop the falsetto and allegros and back away from the opera. Help is on the way! I’m buying you a .44 Magnum hand gun and a leather motorcycle jacket for your birthday, then I’m taking you out to a football (American) game then on to a big juicy steak dinner with artery clogging side dishes and a sweet potato. After that it’s an all night marathon of shoot ‘em up- beat ‘em up- crash ‘em up movies with big breasted girls and minimal plots. That should cure you but good.
Ah yes, Painted Wagon. After watching Clint Eastwood in Rawhide and many a spaghetti western, it never entered my mind that “‘Ol’ Raspy” might be a singer and the movie proved that he wasn’t. But it’s always a pleasure watching Clint and Lee in a movie, alone or together.
Opera. One of my brother’s loves 'em. Screechy sopranos is not my ‘cuppa tea’, but I’ve been to a few. Women and operas, ya know.
And T J, gotta argue with about the name of the beer. NO S!!
It’s simply Schaefer Beer. As in that great advertising jingle:
Schaefer - is the - one beer to have, when you’re having more than one.
Schaefer’s pleasure - never fades - even when the day is done.
The most rewarding pleasure in this man’s world,
For people who are having FUN.
Schaefer - is the - one beer to have when you’re having more than one!
Left upstate New York in 1994 but never forgot that great song. The beer wasn’t too bad for the price, either. But you could get a six pack of Rheingold (Reingold?) for 99 cents; cheaper than a six pack of Coca Cola!
Go for it Jack, I can always use a new leather jacket, and I know the place to go for dinner Ruth Chris Steakhouse where they grill the 2 inch thick steaks in pure butter, and I can sell the .44 for enough to get a Uintah Mallet and a couple of Shays for my layout! …at least you know I have my priorities straight!
Shaefers…Schaefer…I just call it Sh…Oops! almost stepped in that one!
Many many moons ago, when I was a very poor young man, me and some buddies pooled our $ and a friend got a 24 can flat of Schaefers, with the intent of just hanging out to shoot the breeze one hot summer night on the grass of a local elementary school next to a friends house, the guy with the beer came, we started drinking, and about 2 sips into our Schaefer we all said a collective “What the [censored] is this [censored]?” OH MY GOD that was awful beer, it tasted like what a cats pee spray smelled like. Ugh! We left defeated, just abandoning the remaining beers there on the playground, it was so bad, no one - NO ONE - wanted to take the rest home…I sure hope the elementary school kids didnt get wasted at recess the next morning. [:O]
Anyway that was the day I decided for me it would be Good Beer or No Beer at all. Dont drink [censored]
Strangely enough i agree with everyone and i am right behind this thread. I have a few things to add.
1/ I do not like heavy beer at all, however i have drank Guiness at their brewery in Dublin and absolutely loved it.
2/ I do not believe you could drink dark heavy beer here in the tropics, just too hot and the beer will be too hot and you will need a terrific constitution to drink it. I feel the same way about red wine at room temperature.
3/ I love our own and German beers drank so cold it nearly has ice floating on top and that is best for me here in Oz.
Kim, any movie that features Clint Eastwood attempting to sing…“Paint yer…grrrrrrrrr…wagon…grrrrrr…paint it…grrrrrrr…red…grrrrrrrrrrr”
Should be buried in a peat moss and recycled as compressed fireplace logs[(-D]
