Milk Car Trouble

I got a Lionel milk car from the late 40’s or early to mid 50’s and I have tried everything, full power doors propped open. And the same thing happens; the man goes halfway out of the car at the speed of light and rarely shoves a milk can out. And the only thing I can think of is opening it up but I can’t figure out how. And because I am starting a layout soon I want to fix it. Thanks!

There are (2) U-shape springs holding the shell on the base. They extend the width of the base, one front, one back. You need to squeeze the springs side to side to get the ends out of the shell.

The the shell will pull right off.

[:)]If you figure it out let me know as I have the same problem & my intutive mechanical skills are questionable.

Have all the guests go home and it will work perfectly! [(-D]

Seriously let us know what you find. Could another can be jammed somewhere that keeps it from extending out all the way?

Once you get the shell off clean and lube the linkages, and maybe a shot of contact cleaner for the selonoid. Sometime there just might be a milkcan that’s hung up inside. Test it before putting the shell back on.

You also need to remove the doors on both sides of the car. They snap over the bottom edge of the car & frame. Several adjustments are explained in Greenburg’s including spring tension, shaving some off the milkman’s side, & adjusting the can sweep arm.

I gave up & took mine to a pro. Turns out another of the operating arms was bent. It needed all new wiring anyway.

Good luck,

Charlie

Adjustments, Adjustments, Adjustments. Check operating voltage.

It worked! I just needed to fix a wire and lube all the linkage. It is running beautifully. Thanks for all the help!
