The other day I was looking out my window watching a CN freight go by here in southern Ontario, and I saw a big (automove parts type) box car in the consist with Milwaukee Road on it! I could not believe my eyes! I have not seen a car with that fallan flag for so long, that I can not actually recall if I have ever seen one in these part before.
There are fewer than 500 freight cars left carryng MILW reporting marks. Most of these are open and covered hoppers.
However, the former MILW cars are definitely out there–mostly box cars and covered hoppers. If you know where to look you might be able to spot some ex-MILW gondolas, coil cars, bulkhead flats, Center-Beam flats, and even a few woodchip gons.
i’ve seen a few of those auto part boxcars come along csx through deshler.have also seen some dt&I along the old nkp line in leipsic too.

I ask because there were some of the “original NYCs” still around through the Conrail years, but most NYC marked cars these days are old Conrail cars remarked with NYC for the Conrail split-up. CSXT got anything with NYC on it, NS got all the other reporting marks.
How about a Chicago Great Western tank car in original paint, with luck strike logo, but with spray painted CGW reporting marks. Looks original and untoched outside of the spray paint. It was sitting with some other cars at the spur that goes to the UP office just east of the EJ&E diamonds.
Speaking of “old” NYC cars, probably 10-15 years ago I was motoring along U.S. 84 next to CSX’s ex-ACL line from Waycross, GA to Montgomery (I think), AL. Nearly dropped my teeth when an ex-NYC boxcar in jade green, with the “New York Central” oval in black and white, passed by in a train. Didn’t get a build date or any of the details, but it was almost untouched from at least 1968. That’s the only NYC car I’ve ever seen.
I was Tacoma today there was a Milwaukee Center-beam in the yard by the Amtrak station. Great place to sit eating your lunch and watch the trains go by. Good parking lot and a great view of the trains. Not sure whose it is now but you see a lot of Milwaukee cars out here.
I live in Milwaukee, and regularly see Milwaukee Road freight cars. See Misc. Freight Cars for a few of them I got pictures of the last couple years.
I always try to have my camera with me, just in case I see some old rolling stock! I’m always amazed at some of the freight cars I see rolling down the tracks…
