Beautiful steam locomotives! The look like the real things that were put through a hot wash and shrunk! Classy operation! Must have been a cold day too, the way folks were bundled up.

Clearly the steam locos are actual steamers. But are diesels actually diesel-powered? I know of some pretty small diesel engines that are used on tractors and boats. I’m pretty sure the 3-cylinder 25HP one we have in our sailboat would fit; but would that be enough power?
The one I saw likely has a hydrostatic transmission. I’d expect an 18 to 23hp three-cylinder Kubota to be of reasonable size to move one of those trains; I suspect a Perkins or other marine diesel would work if connected to a suitable pump.
Many of these use Kohler gas engines in the size range used on large garden tractors, I believe in the mid-20 hp range with 2 cylinders.
Our 25hp Beta marine diesel is built on a Kubota block.
