Milwaukee Road in Wisconsin

Does anybody have any prototipical info for the MILW in Wisconsin? If so, where do I find it? I am trying to start my layout, but I need some extra info to complete it. If you have any info and can send it, sound off.

Peace

I’d start by joining the MILW discussion group on Yahoo Groups. You may also want to join the WSOR group since the Wisconsin and Southern is made up of mostly ex-Milwaukee Road trackage. The Milwaukee Railroader, published by the Milwaukee Road Historical Association, is a great publication with well-illustrated features on various lines around the system. I don’t belong to the Association but you can buy the magazine at better hobby shops, which I do when there is an article of interest. The most recent edition that I have covers the line west of Janesville out to Mineral Point and includes aerial photos. Great stuff for any modeler looking for historical information. John Timm

Obviously it is a huge topic, too large for any posting here. I am sure dozens and dozens of back issues of the Milwaukee Road historical society magazine would show that even one small town is worthy of a sizable article

I would suggest several books.

First, the Milwaukee Road Remembered, The Milkwaukee Road, and The Milwaukee Road in its Hometown, all good histories by Jim Scribbins, who worked for the railroad. Essential.

Milwaukee Road East by Patrick C Dorin, and the similarly titled Morning Sun book, Milwaukee Road East by Jim Boyd.

Milwaukee Rails by Robert Olmsted. Black and white photos. Some Olmsted books now go for collector’s prices.

Morning Sun: Milwaukee Road - City of Milwaukee by Jeffrey Koeller, and Milwaukee Road Wisconsin and Michigan by William F. Stauss.

Trains of Wisconsin by Rosholt, all black and white, has good Milwaukee Road coverage.

Two books by Bob Baker. Wisconsin Rails and Wisconsin Rails II.

Vol. 3 of “The Glory Machines” video/DVD series had a lot of coverage of the Milwaukee, color film from the forties of the Hiawatha etc. The narration and background music is a little goofy (I’d like to see a DVD version where you could cut both out and just have trains with train sound added) but it’s well worth putting up with it to see the trains in action.

Daniel Lanz wrote a RR book about SW Wisconsin (1800’s t o1980’s) that has alot of early Milw info about the branchlines, what the predecessors were before the Milw ( C.M.St. &P) and abandonment with b and w photos. It has been in and out of print. I’ll see if I can find my copy and let you know. There’s also a Trackside book with Madison, Janesville, Darlington and others. I guess I’ll have to get home to get the info and post it later…
